My brother picked one up with about 160,000 on the clock for £900. Best car he ever bought. Comfortable, nice to drive, classic looks reasonably quick and reasonably good fuel economy. The build quality is also generally very good on them. He even drove it to Berlin and back without any problems.
Best to read up on common faults before buying one though.

the E34 is a very very good car, the tds lump has it's problems, the fuel injection pump was designed to run with the lubricating sulphur in diesel, that's been removed now and the pumps wear out, very very expensive to fix with very limited s/hand part options.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Just picked up a e34 525 m50 manual tourer with plans to run it until mot deems it to expensive to keep on the road and then use it as a engine/box donor but its starting to grow on me, lovely to drive, loads of power, vanos system seems to be behaving. Starting to get strange urges to keep it

I had a tds saloon for a week or two and they do pull well, not exactly good diesel economy though, unless you get cheap derv your better off with a petrol 525 M50

I've heard something about this before, but I was also considering one of these for racking up some motorway miles on. Do the fuel pumps go without warning, or can you establish if it's in decent nick before you buy? Or is it just better to find something else?e301988325i wrote:the E34 is a very very good car, the tds lump has it's problems, the fuel injection pump was designed to run with the lubricating sulphur in diesel, that's been removed now and the pumps wear out, very very expensive to fix with very limited s/hand part options.

Just make sure it has a good steady idle (particularly autos) and doesn't drip diesel from the pump. You also want to hear it start from stone cold. They don't like starting when the fuel level is below 1/4 of a tank but most starting issues are shagged glow plugs, a so-so battery (these need a really, really strong one) and a 30p sealing O ring where the pump fits into the tank.

I bought one with a refurb pump receipt 15,000 miles previously.snakebrain wrote:I've heard something about this before, but I was also considering one of these for racking up some motorway miles on. poor hot starting is the real give away, but I don't know how long you can expect from them I'm afraid
