tyres for the 328

hi all! right im looking for some rear tyres for the 328 in 235/40r17 goosy pointed me in the direction of mpv tyres... im currently looking at the toyo proxes... i would go for the eagle F1's but i have heard that they dont last that long.. but the grip is second to none... whats my fellow zoners opinions??

are you running 235/40/17 front and rear and have you got wider rears?

sorry just read the op properly

, im running F1s on our e36 and they seem to be lasting very well, only the wife driving so they dont get much abuse though

toyos are a good reasonably priced option for the cost conscious e30 owner what you really want now you've moved on to a quality car are quality tyres ie bridgestones or michelins.

Dunlop sp sport's is what I have on the 540i, but in 235/35r17 IIRC. They seem to grip pretty well. They are around the £105 a tyre boundary, going on a reciept in the history. An option anyway...

I have enjoyed eagle f1's and toyo t1rs and t1s' in the past as well, I suspect a racing driving may be able to tell you the difference, but most normal people will say they are much of a muchness in the dry but the F1's slightly better in the wet. If you look at the old GSD3 profile on the f1, its fairly clear why they are better in the wet.

i think you should be running 245/40/17 on the rear, its to get the rolling radius the same as the front otherwise the abs gets confused, might be talking crap here but is just what i remember

You do indeed want to get as close as you can.
I'd be asking on an E36 website for detailed technical questions about the E36 ABS system...

Overall diameters:
235/40 r17 = 620mm
225/45 r17 = 634mm
245/40 r17 = 628mm

i know the staggared bbs 328 wheels are 7.5jfront and 8.5j rear and should have 225/45/17 front tyres and 245/40/17 rears, if you look on ebay there are deals on two of each tyre size as a bmw e36 package

If 245/40 r17 is factory for the rears, then fitting 235/40s would indeed be a bit silly.

245/40 r17 for the rear it is then! whats standard for the front??

+1 on the conti sportcontact 3's! I run the predecessor which are 2's funilly enough on my sport and were on the rear of the S50. I cant fault them in any way whatsover! Wet and dry they are very good and were good on track and at the ring in the S50.

They are also fitted as standard equipment from factory to various performance cars including some BMW's, Porsche's Audi's and some of the Renault sport models.

They were about £340 for 2x 205/50R16 and 2x 225/45R16 sizes but that was with a little discount.

A tyre in my oppinion up there with the eagle F1 and pilot sport.

As for proxes, as said they are a budget performance tyre and i have heard from various people that they dont last. Simon13 reckons a set will last 15ish laps of the ring before they are finished and he doesn't punnish them.

i run toyo proxes on my 325 and they do last, i have always gone back to proxes after trying other brands. the old T1S' did wear out pretty fast as they were so soft so the people that dont rate they should try the newer T1R's instead of just slating them

Prefered the t1-r I put on the m3 to eagle f1s they replaced. More dry grip, very close in the wet, not the longest lasting tyre ever, but not silly either. A set of rears on my m3 lasted over 10000 miles, fronts a good few thousand more than that. Mostly cross country stuff, very little town / motorway stuff and I don't potter about ;)

Not great if you intend to do lots of trackdays as they can overheat fairly quickly ( but have been fine on hothatches for trackdays)
