I think I'm right in saying the front half of a compact is the same as a dirty six so it should drop straight in. I bought a whole M50 engined E36 a few weeks ago for £50 off ebay, I couldn't transport it though so I just went around and took everything I wanted for £50.
If you are prepared to do it yourself and have time to search for a bargain you could do it VERY cheap!

the only thing you might have trouble with is finding a diff to use because a compact is the same rear setup as an e30

yep, a-pillars forward the compact is exactly the same as the e36 saloon (minor detail differences like headlights aside) rear suspension, subframe and diff is pretty much identical to e30 stuff.
rear diff depends on what gearing you want. if you don't do too much motorway stuff then a 3.64 might be ok (popular upgrade on 1:1 gearboxed e30 m3s) but for everyday use something like an m3 3.25 or 3.15 might be more suitable.

Why dont you go for an 2.8 liter engine instead?
its basicly the same engine as an 325i but with a bit more power, and I do think they have the same price tag...

agreed but the going rate for a M52 from a decent breakers yard is about £1250 now as they have caught on that it is a good engine for the E30.hongkongfuey wrote:atech or spadge
Just buy a M50 and save some pennies for a supercharger then you have a bloody weapon

4-6 pot conversion on an E36:
Rear battery relocation
Battery tray removal
ecu/ews swap
You might need to change the box under the heater vent as the 6 pot has more wires going through the grommets.
PAS bottle MAY need relocation, I can't remember if they're in different places.
New rad (given)
Diff you could get quite easily-3.4 I think is the right one.
6 pot ARB is deeper than the 4 pot, so you'll need that
If you have an engine in a car with everything in tact and running that you want the engine from, PM spadge. He might give it a go.

How old are you mark? Insurance shouldnt really be a problem, I can sort you a conversion out once you have made your mind up, or I can help you decide
