how fast are these? do they handle like the e34? also how much does a decent one cost now? as they tend to be cheaper than the old 635i's etc.

IIRC, 0-60 is about 7 seconds. Performance varies between the overdrive and non-overdrive manual models (and obviously the auto) due to gearing.
They are and aren't like the E34 with regards to handling. When properly sorted (good bushes etc), they handle very well - if they aren't, they are awful! They're lighter and smaller than the E34, and I'd say they're like a mix of E30 and E34 in handling. (In fact, the wheelbase is pretty much the same as the current 1 series)...
A good one should be about £2000 upwards. You may get a good one cheaper if you're lucky.

I've got one and am very fond of it. Progress is cumulative, rather than genuinely rapid but they do hustle along when asked. They have a tendency to rust, and (similarly to the E30) the bodykit tends to hide many secrets.
Mine was £450 and was a shed; no MOT, needed welding, brakes, hoses.... I've spent about £700 to bring it up to a decent standard but it still needs work. For a MOT'd runner you're looking £1500 min I'd guess.
They do actually handle very well, Pilsbury is entirely correct (IMO) about the bushes though. The back happily steps out on demand but mine is very predictable and it a hoot on b-roads.
Incidentally, I'm back on the 'Zone as I think a 325i tourer would be the perfect compliment to it!

i know of one moted to June or July needs the rear bushes sorted and a bit of a TLC under the bonnet IE temp sensor and a service.. needs one tiny bit of welding on the passengers sill at the back the owners wanting £500 for it as shes no where to keep it. its the switchable auto white on a d plate. its had new front wings and the front end painted which isn't the greatest colour match but is a straight and solid old bus

What he said, but I have had a few and think they are better than the e30,e34,and e24.A BMW driving machine at its best.Pilsbury wrote:IIRC, 0-60 is about 7 seconds. Performance varies between the overdrive and non-overdrive manual models (and obviously the auto) due to gearing.
