Got a 2001 Y-plate 728i semi auto (tipronic/steptronic?), goes well but pushed too hard goes into limp mode. Been doing some research and realised bmw have sealed the auto boxes for life with oil and filter?
could this possibly be my problem?
Oil is surely going to thin with age and mileage?
What if there is a very slow oil leak, car is now touching 8 years?
Heard some stealers will say this boxes are sealed for life and wont change the oil and filter but some will, Guess its down to the mechanics experiance i suppose?
Seen quite a few of the boxes with similar problems?
just wanted to know if anyone had any experiance with this problem.
will try and change the oil and relevant filter before I send it into diagnostics, worth a try?
Cheers Sean.

I think you need to get it plugged into to a diagnostic set up for the codes to be read, could be something simple like a poor earth or even a duff sensor, or it could be some crud getting caught up in a valve causing it to go into limp mode. A specialist can do this and a gearbox service on these by dropping the pan etc for you, so maybe that's your first port of call?
