e36 325i whining/ vanos noise ?

sorry if this is not the right section to put this in .....

a mate at work ha a e36 with a m50 single vanos engine , with a anoying whine it also has a tappy sound from the vanos area are they linked ? we have changed alternator +belt+ water pump and cant solve the noise . the whine goes away when the belt is off
we have heard that the early m50 have a habbit of having noisy/rattly vanos units and they were modded at a later date to cure this
we found this vid on the tube it sound just the same

if the belt is off its got to be something to do with something conected up buy the belt. the engine in that vid sounds fooked like the cam is rattling its tits off
