I drove mine with a bit of a heavy foot, on boost quite a lot, and still managed 30-35. I'd say 40-45 would be possible if you drive like fairy.
E46 M3 CSL but dreaming of another E30.

I have an e39 525tds touring, and I get an average of 36mpg, I do around 500+ miles to a tank. Same engine heavier car. Whilst coming back from holland it averaged 69 and on one trip back laden was doing a good 47mpg

I get 40ish driving normally, it's a manual touring (less aerodynamic, and heavier than a saloon). The autos give better economy. For 2 reasons, 1 you don't use fuel re-spooling the turbo every time you change gear and 2 they have 5sp auto boxes with a taller top cog. wish I'd bought one now.
If you're having problems with it I might be able to help as I've had more than a few!

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Don't bother. A 318i E36 will be cheaper to buy, cheaper on fuel and apart from the odd head gasket failure , bombproof and fixeable cheaply

My mate has an E36 4-door TDS auto. He lives in Cornwall, and gets around 40mpg travelling between Cornwall and Poole.
He works 11 miles from home, and reckons he puts £40 in every 3 days just going to and from work... 66miles on £40?
It gets left behind by my 318i auto Touring too, though not much in it.

Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

If I was worried about running costs I wouldn't have two BMWs now would I? I love the diesel torque in my cruiser! You're right in some respects, it is less stressfull running with a disposable engine
To Gordon, I've heard you say yours can keep up with a 325i E30 .

Not normally me going on about its performance mate, Magpie and Felix79 keep telling me how surprised they are by it...e301988325i wrote:To Gordon, I've heard you say yours can keep up with a 325i E30 .
I usually say that although it's not as quick, it doesn't embarass itself against 6 pots. I would expect it to be left for dead, but it doesn't.

I wouldn't be so sure. It's got some fair pull to it. Admittedly it all happens in one big rush and you're left wondering where the rest of your money has gone but it's no worse than a spending 20minutes with a cheap whoree30bmlover wrote:neither would the tds lole301988325i wrote:but it wouldn't pull the skin off custard, and that's before you add passengers and luggage!pacerpete wrote:Don't bother.
