I'm potentially after one of these as a comfy old cruiser. The delights of the financial meltdown, ridiculous petrol prices and the E65's replacement on the horizon makes them an even cheaper car (to buy) at the moment.

What are the running costs like? Are they similar to an E39 528i? Anything specific to look out for? The one I'm interested in is a whisker under £2K, FBMWSH, 110k, later non-nikasil block and just looks like a stunning car (the best looking 7 IMO) at a bargain price.

Any advice gratefully received!

i think these 7`s are the nicest! there awsome on a nice set of big alloys or just in the sport trim i'd love one! i wonder how they would compare to a 328i on fuel (both manual)? they are going very cheap allot of car for the £.

Watch out for leaky fuel tanks - different to other E38s & a **** to get hold of! E38s in general have a lot of things to go wrong, & will cost a lot more than say an E32/E34 to look after - as well as probably not being as reliable. They are great looking cars though!

They are great cars, my dad had the 740i (4.4 engine). It drove awesome (had genuine 20" Alpinas on it). With the prices now, you should be able to pick up a good one for a good cheap price. If you go for a 728, i would say get the Sport Version

is there any difference on the sport model? bar the interior and wheels? as to me the bodys look the same only colour coded? and the sports seem to go for quite a bit more just wondering what you get for the bigger cost?

They should also have sports suspension, 18" M Parrell wheels.

I don't think they came with an LSD.

My mates dad has the sport version and it is on M-tech suspension with something like a 10mm drop.

Really noticeable difference to another mate's non-sport 728, which rides pretty badly, partly due to its heavy wheels.

728 is the one to go for as petrol costs are unthinkable on the v8s.

I dont know if this is an issue for you but when i had my E39 528i,i looked at a few 728i's,i did a quick insurance quote and they were a lot more money to insure.
