They're a very good track car. A good one with a good set of shocks and springs will worry an E30 M3. 0-60 is 7.5, 0-100 is 18.5 which is less that a second slower than a 215 bhp M3.
And they're £800 for a tidy one.

I have owned a e36 325 and 2 328s and I rate the 2.5 very highly. I think they offer extremely good value for money atm and if you buy a half tidy one, give it a service and fit a new water pump they are generally bomb proof.
Mine got seriously used at 3 or 4 drift days and daily for 6 months and with only one oil change and no other maintenance and the engine was sweet as a nut.
328s are more expensive, more fragile and nowhere near as responsive. They do have a little more torque and go a bit faster but I know where my money would be for a track car.
I say all this even with my current car being a 328i sport which I love.
