There is a switch on the box which is forward for 'S' (sport I presume) and backwards for 'M' (what's that?) in the middle of the switch is a button with 'E' on it (economy?)
Obviously 'S' holds the revs higher, what's the difference between 'M' and 'E'?

It has the usual 1,2,3 which I assumed you use if you want manual. Do these only work if the swtich is in the 'M position rather than 'S'?

yes to do 1,2,3 it needs to be M. S mode will be the box changing for you but it just means it will rev to red line and lock out the over drive 5th gear, and hold onto each gear longer and not change up so quickly
