both manual i read a vs in a mag about tourings and they said the m5 was better but they would have the 540i as on road was just as good (m5 being better on the track)
so is a 540i manual really as good as an m5 in every day life?
let roll!

simple its a personal choice
I have owned a reasonable E34 M5 3.6 and its a blindingly good car and freackingly quick car.
IMHO i would have the M5 but the 540i would a good car to have as bits are cheaper to by but i think running costs would be the same.
HTH

Ben

be careful with the 6 speed boxes, they can self destruct in second and are difficult/expensive to repair. any dodgy noises or crunchiness and i'd be walking.

'88 e30 328i M52 track bint.

A 3.8 M5 will p1ss all over a 540. I know , i have owned lots of each including the daytona M5 touring in the total BMW article. Both cars are timebombs with values very low and costs to repair very high. Tread warily and don't buy dogs as they really will bite and no matter how much you throw at them you will still have a sad turd.320ise wrote:thanks for the tip, is there allot in it in a strait line? as power to weight on the john g burns sight the v8 has 2 bhp power to weight more!

The 540i would be a lot quicker without the very tall gearing. I've driven a 530i V8 manual touring with a standard 540i motor and that was very quick.

I would imagine that traction is the limiting factor on low end acceleration rather than gearing.
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap

I ran a 3.9 open diff. Was fantastic for traffic light races, but I'd top out at 125mph. Not good when your chasing a porker! I reckon a 3.4/3.6 diff would be fine. Not sure how it would be on a 6 speed box though.

The two boxes have nearly the same gearing from first to fifth, but the 6 speed box has one more gear (0.83:1, while both 5th gear are 1:1)
