Has anyone got one? I like the idea of a V8, just how bad would fuel consumption and servicing costs be as compared to a 525i? I know a 530i isn't appreciably quicker than a 525, but they seem to usually be better specced. Seems I could take advantage of the high fuel prices as people are desperate to get rid of V8s so it seems values have gone through the floor.
My man maths works that I only do about 6k miles a year, so any percentage change in fuel costs doesn't affect me as badly as others.
Thoughts? Do I need to come to my senses?

The 535i is 6 cylinder. I think the 540i is the best option as there is not much difference between the 530i and the 525i.

Think I've got it now, it's e39 535s that are V8s, and the e34 530i V8 effectively replaced the 6-cylinder 530i & 535i. I think...
No-one's talking me out of it! I'm in critical danger of biting off more than I can chew, aren't I?

A mate of mine has a lovely K plate 530i auto Touring with all the toys and its a very nice thing indeed. Stupidly smooth, goes fairly well and built like a tank. The 540i must be very rapid.
He averages the grand total of 21mpg in mixed driving and can get high 20's on a run.
The V8's are prone to cam cover oil leaks where oil will leak into the plug wells, buggering the coil packs.

I've had a v8 530 and a straight 6 530 and the V8 knocks socks off it - and knocked socks of a 325 touring when I had a little go
Anyway - I managed to get 466 miles out of a tank and it was a 530 auto and the auto box was stuck in sport mode
- lots of careful driving tho !
fuel consumption isn't that bad and the roar of the V8 is sweet - but it's a similar situation like owning a 320 to a 325, same engine so I always wanted the 540 - More power and similar mpg
One of the issues with owning the V8's is that the parts a more expensive and the M60 is quick heavy up front, altho I'd never say now to owning another again as they do go !

Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.
Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

Annoyed, there was a straight 530i manual touring went for £700 on ebay last week, I forgot when the auction was ending, would have been a laugh. Sticking with e30s for now it seems...
