Hi all,
I've got an e28 518i that I'm removing the engine out of. It's an m10 lump, is it possible to remove this engine with out an engine crane? Is it possible/plausible to drop it onto the ground and get it out from under the car?
Thanks in advance!

Someone has done that with 4 lengths of studbar.
Replace the front cross member bolts with threaded bar and simply loosen the nuts to slowly lower the engine to the floor.

if you have a jack you can undo the cross member and suspension and lower it onto the ground

I've done it using a set of big axle stands and 4 lengths of M10 studding so that you gently lower the engine down to the ground by winding nuts down the studding.
Did one just this weekend gone by taking the front suspension off, lowering the car down so the subframe was resting on a bit of timber sheet, unbolting the subframe and then jacking the car up again.
All you have to do then is pull the engine out having first disconnected the prop etc.

for all the tossing around, especially if you can't get the car jacked high enough to pull the engine from underneath, hire an engine crane for the weekend for about £30

unbolt from gearbox and LIFT it out.
I´ve done that twice with M10´s.
have a strong friend or two to help you and watch the fender.

Imagine the shame of telling your grand children that the reason you have a hernia / piles / bum cancer / slipped disc etc is that you were horsing a M10 donk out of an E28 !

Thanks for the replies all! The reason I'm removing it is because I'm breaking the car and someone wants the engine. I offered it to him for £30 with him to remove it. He then offered me £100 if I removed it. Do you think this sounds ok? Not some sort of con?! Might well hire an engine crane for sake of ease, but don't want to remove it for him to then offer me the original £30 price I asked.

Buy a crate of cheap beer and invite a couple of strong mates around to help.

Piece of p1ss. Remove the front bumper and headlights (worth money if in really good condition), unbolt the lower front panel and cut the rest off with a hacksaw. Unbolt the engine from the box is situ and pull the engine out on a trolley jack. I did a 316 E30 like this and the exhaust manifold was still warm when it was out on the floor. M10 1.8's are scrap value only (@ £6) so get paid BEFORE you remove it.
