ok, so the older M30 is the better bet than the newer M60. I suppose you can do more with the old M30 Sledge hammer 8)

530i.

More power, More Torque and that oh-so glorious V8 harmony above 4,000rpm+

What more could you want?

Preface lift looks so much better proportioned, with nicer E30like wing mirrors and cheaper, simpler repairs it has to be the 535i.

Definitely the 535i. Don't get me wrong I love v8s but the 530i isn't very appealing, v8 thirst with barely more than M30 performance. If you were to comparing the big 6 to a 540i then i'd think harder, 280 horses is it bit more tempting! Really you're comparing a top of the range pre-facelift to a mid range facelift. The old iron block M30 has proved stronger and more reliable than the delicate M60 too (nikasil!). Its as good as a 6 cylinder BMW got at the time bar M Power. It'll be cheaper too and easier to find a manual (sorry i'm assuming you want a manual!).

Its all independent, I have both M30 and M60 now and to be honest, its the V8 who gives me a smile on the face.... Old 6 pots engines are very good from BMW but the V8 just kicks balls (and I know this because right now I have over 400bhp of Beemers in my name)

thanks for the comments, yes i was looking at the mid range sort off e34, the 540i vs 535i would have been a harder sell. The 535i looks like a nice option, as we have seen what guys have done to them in the e30. I havent heard of many tuned m60b30's.
