I wish I had. The M5 uses the 535i/540i rack with the derivers arm spindle that has the small motor to tension the blade against the screen at speed. They're bloody rare and on an M5 an absolute fuckfest to fit, an utter bastard. Rather you than me!

Hats off to Alpina for what they did with the N55 then.

Starting to wonder how different/similar Alpina's N55 and BMWs S55 are. The mind boggles :mad:

Well, it's reckoned to be a case of dropping the engine and crossmember down to get the rack out - it's a taller engine than the M30. That's as well as getting the blower motor out, a bastard to get the outer casing back on. I hope it's not a DeAvia system as that's a dashboard out job as well.

I often wondered about removing the collar nut on the worn side, drilling a hole into the spindle housing, winding a grease nipple in there and pumping loads of grease in.

The E32, despite having an almost identical system, never suffers from rack wear.
