Why not seek out a really nice E34 M5 LE ?
Best of the bunch
Why settle for second best ?

Trevor, Chris Plummer has been servicing it so no worries there, anything hes himself has been bought from Barons only for parts. I think Barons have done some of the servicing also.

i don't know if the lower bits should be grey or black along the sills? i forgot the first aid kit under the passenger seat is still unused, the spare has never been used and is on an michelin MXX2 tyre original id say?

I've not got the chassis number but its on a short 6 digit H plate reg so a 1990 car i'd guess

Pony i've had the best in the Bi turbo in someways, a 3.6 M5 isn't a bad bet. A good one always makes its power so it will be quick enough for me and i wouldn't have. I could use this and not worry about leaving it in tescos etc enjoy it, add a few toys along the way. theres a really nice car there to be made i think. Its not the usual fooked about with rubbish that alot m5's and 3.6's are

Ok but what would you rather have a nice 3.6 or a nice E34 M5 LE
1 of 50 in the UK
With all the toys
Plus they look handsome as f000k the LEs ?
And u got a special edition innit :-)

The LE's are low spec, the only thing different is the colours scheme, they have no rear/door blinds, cruise, heated seats, rear seats for two or hi fi option. In fact an LE in terms of spec is less than this particular 3.6 is

Did i mention its in my home town also? :o The geezer is like 60 odd bought it in his 40's for i guess alot of money in 1999? Hes babied it from cold till the engine oils to temp before pressing on. He stressed that bit to me

3.8's can grenade their engines, the 6 speed boxes can break, the floating discs are major ££££ these are potential bi turbo style bills a 3.6 car doesn't suffer from as much.

rear discs and pads for a 3.6? £70 from euros for pagid stuff :o

Fair enough
If it were me and I were hunting E34 M5 would have to be E34 M5 LE
I thought LE were high spec with Nurburgring suspension, 6 speed, 340bhp and all the toys
Guess they can be retrofitted

The 3.6 is less of a liability on the drive than a specced up 3.8 I'd say. Yes it's the underdog but fuck me! What an underdog.

Chris Plummer is a good stamp to see Si.

We've been hearing about this car for years. It was meant to be Si.........

I honestly don't think i'd lose money on it? I'll improve it in a few places which seems to be cosmetics rather than engine rebuilds and welding like normal for me! Once i get the monies for the B10 i might go and knock on the door again and talk monies.

He came into Dads workshop last friday in it saying hes willing to let it go again

I've got a heated rear seat kit for one of these :o

Was driving home from working round the mother in laws house earlier which is the other side of town to me and low and behold. This is a mate of my Dads and its usually tucked up on his drive but its on the road, he wants to sell and get a porka 993 of some sort. So i knocked on the door to see the crack, hes mad has 20 motor bikes, 2 morgan 3 wheelers a 1957 pickup truck plus this and other cars.

its a 3.6 in brilliant pink, 157,000 on the clocks he bought it in 1999

Its got black half leather interior which is fully electric including lumbar, plus the rear seats for two only. Rear blind, shadow line., clear indicators. Grey headlining. The rims are 9j rears which he thinks its had from new? Hes deleted the SLS and its running Koni rear shocks. Air con is still on R12 but has stopped working this past year. Its had a clutch, its on goodyear F1 tyres all round

I cant find any rust on any of the panel work, hes had the skirts off several times over the years to clean, waxoyl etc. Its never been welded. The interior could do with a good hoover but its boardering on immaculate, the drivers seat is very very good, note he has used seat covers!

I like it bar the tired paintwork its seems mega original especially in the engine bay, a Dick lovett of swindon car originally so no northerness here. I could of had it for £2000 a couple of years ago but he wants i think i could get it for about £4500

Its looked after mechanically but needs a good interior clean and some paintwork if it can't be detailed up. Skirts painting silver again, rims refurbed

What spesh fitted the wheel covers ? :(

Back in about '95, I went with a mate, to Thames Ditton as they had an Alpine white M5 in. On the "H" it was running the turbine covers and we both agreed, it should only be bought if they changed them for the throwing stars. Must have been common back in the day I would think.

The deal changed as a week later they had a 3.0 Daytona coupe come in and he bought that instead.

Strange that today but I think I'd revert to the turbines, just to be different.

Throwing stars are now very passe. Turbines are where it is at. I recently served a set of COVERS for £400 ! :D

Or

manual 530i V8 touring, this one has great spec with air con, sunroofs, cruise, air con, LSD and had one owner until 2013 with 122,000 on it. But its in aberdeen but its spent its life in essex and he claims its not seen the salty scottish roads.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E34-530i- ... 43cdc8797a

Or there was a le mans blue e39 m5 for 6k with 120,000 on it with a nice spec but its gone, i guess its sold

The e34 touring has the scope for a bigger V8 drop in like a pina 4.6 or S62 - would be silly quick. 540i is nicely under the radar also but both lack the specialness of an M5

530i is only suitable for a transplant!!

E39 M5 - surely the values can only go up. Although I am certain the maintenance bills would offset the possible value increase.

Indeed jon, so i've read the later M62b44 like you had will go in. They have a useful amount of extra grunt over the M60b40's

If you're going to mess about with V8 swaps just go straight for the S62.

true, i've in all honesty not got the time or motivation for that kind of work. Which brings you back to something you can drive and maintain. So the 540i or an M5 as going concerns

540 will have lower bills 6 speeds and v8 sound track. M5 that specialness and more toys. Too many cars not enough money/space/time to own them all :x

Si,

In 24k miles mine cost about £700 in maintenance.

Rear subframe bushes
One airbag(air 'spring')
Rocker cover gaskets
Rear discs and handbrake drums
Oil changes
Odds and sods

I thought it was very reliable and cost effective. Maybe I got lucky. It was a good wafter but no B road hustler.

Simon, I can view the 530 wagon for you if you want. I thought about buying it when I saw it last week but the grey leather put me off. Looks alright otherwise.

Nothing trev the M5 is still in town. I can't go knocking on the door if i've no money. I'm just driving myself up the wall at the moment about buying another tram.

Nickso i think that 530i would be a great car, indeed the colour combo sucks but its great spec nearly 1 owner etc. He will take £1500 for it i'm sure

I've wanted a manual 540i as long as an M5 in some respects. I'd like to sample both.

Simon if that wagon was a 540i it would probably already be on the drive but grey leather and 3.0 put me off. My 540i manual was a great car til I burst the gearbox. It had done 182k like the black one in your link.

Can't be arsed with an engine transplant project just now.....still need to find another e30 first.

Higher than the E92 M3, E60 M5, E63 M6, E28 M5, Z4 MC, Z3 MC and the very mighty E46 M3 CS

You know it makes sense Rodney

Your right Nick, the biggest pain and i'm not normally put off by it is the distance. Its nearly 600 miles. So its a flight there and a fair bit in fuel to get back.

Did you drive the 540 hard? You hear mixed reports on the boxes, but i'm not an animal

Pony i'm not sure i'm quite ready for those running costs at the moment.
