Basically bss the dealership are saying that they need to open up and investigate what happened inside. They are saying the last owner over ran the service. Trying to say that could be why. The over run service was two services before and two months ago had the end of warrenty check up. Is this a wriggle out for bmw uk??

A major wriggle, don't take it! Chains should not snap on a 3 year old car!

What should I say if that's what they tell me. The car had end if warrenty check two months ago. Is the chain something they should look at??

If it had an end of warranty check then you have them by the balls!
As Simon has said, over running a service would not cause the chain to break!
They will need to strip to inspect damage to decide weather it's a repair or replacement.
If it really gets sticky, contact BMW UK direct, make a fuss, mention the watchdog report, tell them you have owned BMWs in the past and with incidents like this you won't be buying again!
Basically make a fuss but not aggressively.

They are offering 50% towards parts and nothing else. Calling bmw uk again to see what they say. The bill could be around 8-10k. Might aswell buy another car

Who did you buy it from ?
Main dealer
Independent dealer
Private
If it was any of the first 2 I'd dump it back on their doorstep demanding a refund before going through all this warranty rubbish

Was private buddy. Anyone give me any ideas of how much a rebuild is away from the dealer if that's what I need to do. They want 1200 to strip it. The dealer changes his mind every hour. I now feel like I wana take it off them and go somewhere else. Bss or simon or anyone in the know. How much would you charge/should I pay?

To remove, completely strip and replace the crank all all the other timing parts is about 16 hours book time.

You need to get medieval, in a nice way with BMW customer services. It is not acceptable that a car just over 3 years old with full dealer history craps itself spectacularly ! 200k , yes , it has had its innings BUT not a sub 50k (iirc) minter.
This is a KNOWN issue with these turds, BMW KNOW all about it and are throwing money at this problem up and down the country.
Sit down with a cold drink and Google ' BMW 520 D engine failure' look through this little lot and make some notes. There will be lots of instances of people in similar situations and very different outcomes. Read through various threads and contact people who have had a satisfactory outcome and make a note of how they played the game. It is a game, and it is yours to lose!
BMW want you to turn turtle and pay to fix their sub standard scrap but if you fight your corner, they WILL play ball.

Snag is,it reflects right down the line to properly built stuff like E30,E32 and E34.diable wrote:It is shocking at how an expensive, quality branded car can fail like this.daimlerman wrote:After reading this horror story,F10 520d has disappeared off my car shopping list!
Potential punter's are put off by this kind of thing.
Think I am kidding?
Look back at Lancia, just one poorly built model(Beta,in case you are struggling)killed off their UK sales.
Any one owning any Lancia is automaticaly tarred with the same brush.

When you look at where many of them are made, it's not really surprising that the quality standard is pretty poor:

Can't really comment on how good build quality an F10 is but I did change a rear caliper on one the other day due to it leaking out the piston. The car was only just a year old with 16k on.

Why would the owner be paying a back street garage to fit one when it would clearly be within the 3yr manufacturers warranty?maxfield wrote:Can't really comment on how good build quality an F10 is but I did change a rear caliper on one the other day due to it leaking out the piston. It was a lease company. It should of gone back to the dealer, but generally they need the car back on the road ASAP.bss325i wrote:Why would the owner be paying a back street garage to fit one when it would clearly be within the 3yr manufacturers warranty?maxfield wrote:Can't really comment on how good build quality an F10 is but I did change a rear caliper on one the other day due to it leaking out the piston. Not really sure how it works with them, but I've done a lot of warranty work on new cars.

TBH I'm not 100% sure how it works. We do warranty for a lot of company's 3rd party's. But lease vehicles (Lex auto lease, leasedrive etc) I've done manufactures warranty. And also some manufacturer recalls for lease.

That's interesting as i was under the impression that any manufacturer's recalls and warranty work had to be done by a franchised dealer, not an independent garage.
That's how it works with BMW, Renault and Ford.
What brands have you done recall and warranty work on?

Recalls - I've done a few things on Fords and vauxhalls. A lot of Transits on the back axle there's a couple of nuts that need changing.
Recently I've done 2 gearboxes on new Meganes that were a year old with less than 30k.
Quite a lot of warranty work on Vauxhalls. As they are piles of shit.
Sure I've done a couple of warranty jobs on new VAG stuff too but nothing major.
Whether the lease company's have some different agreement I don't know.
I just fit the parts

Nowt wrong with Voxalls - they're no worse than anything else. Got a taxi ride home tonight in a 2010 Insignia with 150'000 miles and just an airbag light and EGR valve. No w@nked timing chain!
