This is lucky, because if you'd done this all this in secret and unveiled it for him at the wrong moment, he might have cried.Kos wrote: ...it is mine now (been mine sice last feb officially)

The original knob was well worn, as they do on low mileage turds.....
The head unit was a late 80's Blaupunkt Memphis . I sent the turd to Aus with a period correct Berlin but swapped in the Memphis just before serving it and the Berlin came back with me.
Zinnober cars originally came with the burgundy and orange stripe but I think it looks puss, so being a hard core modder

I had the original 415 metrics and Tech 1 wheel and they were given to the new owner.

i think the black and silver striped do look better. even twin thin silver ones would look good.
for the head unit, i've got this for it now.
its a blaupunts , the right illumination but with modern features. £80 new and delivered ! i just hate the blue power button, but the blue spot is a blaupunkt trade mark.

loooong overdue up date
i was rocking the car in standard from for a few year, last year i took a year out from taking the car to shows/meets etc
it needed some mechanical overhauling ( suspension/brakes etc ) and i wanted a few upgrades
first on the agenda was suspension

new sachs advantage gas shocks, H&R springs, new top mounts, mounting rubbers etc
new front calipers and braided brake lines and brake pressure switches

and a new pressure accumulator

also, a fully service including new dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs & leads
old vs new, the old one was date stamped 93, 19 years old
check out the corrosion and condensation, i knew it was on its way out but fuck me, it was bad !!

the rotor was date stamped 98, 14 years old and equally bad

the leads were a PITA. new ones from the dealers £200 vs £60 from Euros. the Euros ones were damaged so the mechanic sourced me a set from another motor factors. again not perfect. they do not come with the lead holder so i had to use my existing bent one ( its a job on the list "to do" in the near future ) and they were fractionally longer. plus the coil lead only had one end with a 90 degree plug. so i raided a spare set i had from an m40 breaker and took the coil lead and it conveniently had the cover good for the coil. job jobed
the rocker cover was taken off, all clearances checked over, checked the oil spray bar and all is good.

then re fitted my new powder coated rocker cover

old vs new again

and before any one says it, i know the heat shield looks a bit pony so that will be sorted soon
also i had the heater motor cover re powder coated as well as a replacement splash guard

and done

also the back box needed changing so i got a new one from the dealers. not too expensive at £285
the chrome tips were NLA, my original ones were decent so saved to be re used
the exhaust as it came from the dealers

and powder coated black

the the system dropped down, you can make out the old welding sleeves. what we did is chop just after them, chopped a bit of the new back box and used the new BMW supplied clamps

the clamps

the original heat shield was removed and replaced with this ( there is a good reason for this )

and then we fitted up the exhaust and made sure it was sat straight. while it looks like it may sit a but low, but thats how they are.
the new heat shield which is stuck on was silver so a quick squirt of some VHT black paint to make it less noticeable

i purchased a 5 channel HK amp, well thats not being used now.
what happened was this, i fitted it and ran it as a test to make sure everything was working, which it was. tried both a sealed box and a ported one, the latter being better in the car, it was a nice warm sound and reasonable bass. that was the problem, bass was only reasonable. i wanted more, not all the time but i when i feel the need for it, i want it. this is also the reason i ditched the factory heat shield, they rattle.
with this car being a keeper, i decided to up the install a bit. i had a a few subs knocking around, a JL 10w3 v2 D2 10w3 v2 D2 and a 10w6 v2 D4.
i got my self another 10w6v2 D4, had a ported box made to my specs going by the limited space in the e24's boot and had it trimmed. the problem with the e24's boot is while it has depth, rear panel to rear bulkhead it is very shallow. at its deepest it is 15". any how to power the 2 10" JL's i'm using my 1000/1v2. to power the 4 corners i'm using a 300/4.
the source has been changed as well a kenwood KDC-BT61U. (it runs my i pod, has integrated bluetooth hands free and OEM orange lighting ) mini ANL fuses used throughout as well. now more AGU fuse issues to deal with.
again, it all gets fitted and set up briefly before it comes back out. the important thig was to set the gains on the amps, because when it all gets fitted it will all be hidden. the only thing you will see in the boot are the 2 subs.i wanted a clean tidy install. nothing flash. i also wanted to keep the boot usabel
this car does most of its outings it is to shows or over night weekends away, and when i go to shows i means an over night bag or 2 for me and a mate/girlfriend and the detailing stuff. i have a quick access point to the distribution block, access to the spare wheel, jack and fuel pump.
any way how does it sound, so far i am happy. works with all types of music and it drops nice and low when listening to hip/hop etc.
i have the i pod mounted in the glove box, i've installed the microphone for the phone where it cant really be seen. set up the colour on the head unit to match the OEM orange dash lighting.
in terms of the final look, i got some OEM boot carpet from the dealers and i've a a couple of OEM boot trim panels. the old panels had become damaged and perished over the years, mainly the car backing. but the carpet it self was in good contrition so i kept sections of it, this has been used in trimming up other section of the boot to help with the install, sections of the hinge brackets that will still remain visible have now been carpeted
the original floor carpet has been cut down to finish where the box face is and the box has now been finally put into position and will not have to come out again. all the carpets have been re fitted and all that left to do it cut out the new floor section and box cover panel.
moving to the front of the car, after routing the power cable, i decided to re tape the engine loom and car loom with new OEM loom tape. just to tidy it up. the OEM stuff is good enough, in fact its better than the after market stuff and last a good 20 years
sound deadening had been layered up ( 3 layers to be exact ) on the rear 1/4 panels, rear panel and floor. before the new floor section goes in i'll be using insulating foam under it to cut down on the vibrations. there are rattles coming from the exhaust heat shield. a mate with the an e24 has the same problem, so its needed to stop it happening. with me needing a new back box, i'll be investigating how it its just because the heat shield is old and starting to perish or just an inherent problem, if its the latter then i'll look into using some motorsport spec heat shilds which stick on. a heat shield is vital as its next to the fuel tank. the motorsport stuff sticks on similar to the way dynamat does on the internal panels but its excellent at reflecting and protecting against radiant heat
a section of loom thats been re taped, the fuse holder for the power lead will have a cover made for it, i dont want it to be be visible. its ghastly and i'm not into having shit like that on show, not on this car thats for sure

also a the spare wheel has been refurbished and mounted, i used a 15" BBS. while still in good condition was a very old tyre and if i have to use it i wouldt not trust it, so a very good and not very old part worn goodyear tyre has been mounted to it
some pics

not much space above the box

new rear panel carpet with highline top cover

one amp mounted on the back of the box

and the other on the side

plenty of dynamat

to finish it off
First up, making a template from cardboard

This gets done for both sides, the it we mark out a template. Lots measuring, checking double checking and re measuring

Then cut !

The boot floor was easier to do as I could use the original floor as template
Once all cut its mocked up

Some minor trimming and filing required

Carpet glue and stanley knife time

And fit

Some extra carpet was used to blend into the port and the floor section has gone to the trimmers to have the edging finished in black leather
I had the same job done on the over mats

And here are some pics of the interior after its be re conolised. it was in decent condition but for £200 quid, its money well spent

also some rear head rest have been fitted

and the tool kit
some bits were missing and others not quite correct. i found what i needed and put them in

new wheels
with some new 17's to go on it would need soem lowering
the springs which were fitted were 35mm H&R ones.
the wheels are ACT 3 pc forged splits, a period wheel
i stripped them down, and re polished the lips and the faces and fitted new chrome bolts.
the lips were not too bad, but where the bolts sit there was some work required

new bolts in

its hard to show but the face of the spokes are polished as well

to try and prevent them going dull and protect them against rain and other crap from the roads it used a new type of wheel sealant
its not affected the shine at all, so lets hope it does it job

wheels fitted

i did also have set of staggered alpinas which were purchased after the ACT's but my mate with the negaro highline wanted them so he's keeping them
they look good on my car but i think the polished lip of the ACT's suits the car better

and if i ever get bored of the ACT's i can take the alpinas back at any stage or fit some Hartge 17's which i have

Alpinas, which ones? 16's or 17's ?
if the ACT's had a silver powder coated centre they's look better in some respects. the black inserts on the polished face at times looks odd but other times i look at them an think they do look stunning. but yes the 17" alpinas do have certain "je ne sais quoi" about them.

They are proper splits
3pc with forged centres
I'd put some RS's on there if I could find them in the right et and widths. These are the correct fitment for an e24 and a period wheel.
ACT use to make the what is now known as the Ronal LS. Coincidently they are called the ACT LS and these are the SC's

I like those wheels, something a bit different to the 'done to death' RS's
Excellent update.
