I reckon the hatch has flopped, hence doing what BM do best, sticking a boot on it. The one series coupe was probably originally made with the US market in mind, as they don't buy hatches out there. If you go to the States, have a look at the Ford Focusses, they're all saloons!

Not forgetting Americas No1 best selling car The Honda Civic, with a boot. Usually an auto fitted with US spec marshmallow suspension.
