Being a e30 novice not much to comment about as for S13 and S14 i got more experience with, they are a joy to race out of the box very progressive and predictive handle and weight balance so any moron can get the arse out and catch it back without molesting some armco. Engine wise cheap to buy if you blow one up, very tunable and loves being red lined with loads of stuff out for them generally think good value and if you have an accident not end of the world, if i had an m3 an stacked it i would be cutting my wrists for being a spanner wrecking such a lovely car (which i doubt be as fast as silvia with same power)
E36 everytime. Afterall it's a BM.
Don't discount the M3 Evo. The 3.2's vanos so called issues aren't something that would put me off.
Get yourself over to www.e36coupe.com for more on the e36 (it's kinda like a e30zone for e36's ;))

4 door 3.0 M3 is a great car to buy Dave. You can get them cheap and they are quite quick. People find them very hard to sell because of them being 4 doors so you can really haggle on the price. They are also lighter than the coupe's.
With some careful tweaking they can be made to go round bends extremely quick and are very quick in a straight line. Out of the box they tend to understeer quite a bit but that's easily sorted with a thicker real ARB.
The jap stuff is very capable also and a fair bit cheaper to buy but I somehow think the turbo cars in your hands will not last very long.....unless of course you go away and force yourself to become more mechanically sympathetic

If I werein a imilar poston as you as to whih obuyI woud go for th e36 M3, not because it has a bmw badge on the front but because after my experience of driving an s14 made me realise how shit the driving position is! obviously each to their own but definately not my cup of tea.
Also I have to play devils advocate on unmolested 200sx's thy are so common up here and everyone I have come across has been drifted!

I understand the points chaps, and thanks for the input.
The way I see it, if an engine goes pop on a Silvia which is highly possible, (although Karans hasn't and he doesn't hang about, and nor does my mates highly tuned weapon, and he drives like a c**t) then a new engine can be picked up for a couple of hundred....As opposed to an M3 which would be more like about £1000. Same with gearboxes..........
I drove Horners car, S14 200SX, and the driving position was spot on, the seats were aftermarket though. The way I could drift at 100mph at Corum (Snetterton) was amazing.
As you may have guessed from my car, I'm FAR more interested in the cars' capabilities than the badge or 'kudos' I'd much rather be flying past CSLs in an unknown car than 'another' M3.

Go for the 200SX or Sylvia in that case Dave.
There is alot of other Jap stuff out there which you can get hold of very cheaply if your clever.

E36 M3 has fallen into chav price range and the whole e36 range is subject to their attention at this time. Much like the e30 6 or 7 years ago.
I'd go for the Jap car. I'd hazzard a guess that it's more responsive to tuning too.
E36 are plagued with well wikking indervijuwel barried monstrosities, with Viking spoilArs, LExarse lights and spud gun exhausts.
7k is not a lot of money when you have finance houses clamouring to dole out loans with a desperate tick of the 'approve loan' box.
I wonder if you ment me on this comment? I live in Yeovil and have had my E36 M3 Saloon for just over 4 years, dont see many others around this are (real) so unless you have no idea what a real one looks like you mean me !
Are you sure your looking at a M3, as I know of three around yeavil, mine and two evo's. Mine is used dailey and is not put away from the weather etc, its built to take it.
Back on topic:
Comparing a tuned Silvia with a standard M3 is harsh. Compare standard to standard and tell me which is best.
Granted the turbo car will always have an advantage on tuning compared to the non turbo M3 engine, but why not add a supercahrger to the M3 or even a turbo and get power that could only be dreamed off from a silvia?
For me personaly, if I was going jap it would be a Evo 6 with a good strong reliable 350bhp totally naked and light.
For all the E36 non lovers out there, you will be surprised how many of the chavs you see driving around have done the car up them selfs, dont take much, couple hundred and you got yourself a M3 REP!!

I would say get the silvia just becuase i would be to worried about using an M3 as a track weapon in case i stacked it.
Saying that if i owned an E30 M3 as a road car i would still be scared about some uninsured muppet crashing in to me

E36 m3 evo i say!
The engines are awsome and sound great on full chat with a nice air filter on them, they pull so hard from 2.5k right up to 7.6k. Ive done loads of trackdays in mine and never had any problem with the engine and the milage is just over a 100k and still screams to the red line in every gear. But i do have it fully serviced with genuine parts as soon as it needs it.
With some good brakes and coilovers you will be surprised what you can beat round a track!

Me too.
Done the 200SX thing, spent £10k+, loved it, drifts better than an M3 could dream of but think M3 will be next weapon of choice.
BUT..........times have changed, might be an E46!
