Good thread!
I've only really had a drive of a 3.8 and it without doubt the coolest car I've driven. I've driven SL55's etc but they are too flashy. The e34 M5 just looks like a mildly pimped 518i-but goes like a f**king rocketship.
Its the torque that makes it for me- so easy to pootle along in 4th at 35-40mph, nail it and then you're doing 100!Ok, so I drive a 320i on a daily basis, so anything is fast compared to that, but my god, the m5 is stunning.
I thought the ride was awesome and the handling was pin sharp for such a big car, then you switch on the suspension to S- and it becomes a 1600kg gokart! Ok, due to its bulk it'll never handle quite as hard as an e30 m3, but it does a bloody good job!
I've had several discussions with e39 m5 owners, and almost to a man they hanker for the e34 back-its so much rawer than the e39.
ziggy, with regards to running costs, shocks are £500 a corner on the 3.8, brakes can be a pain if used heavily for a long period of time, seen a few broken speed limiters etc.
Its never Going to be as cheap as a 325i to run, but if driven sensibly it can give about 25+mpg (on a par with a 535i, but 140bhp up
) Parts are more expensive.Continuous warrenty is a good thing
Guy who'se car I drove reckons its cost him £3.5k in maintainance over 3 years
The way I look at it is £10k for an e34 sounds like a lot of cash, but TBH its 2nd hand mondeo money for a 5 seater, comfortable supercar. You and 4 mates+ the luggage for 2 weeks all fit in it, and can still storm autobahns
Plus, TBH you'd be hard pushed to find another car with that sort of reliability and performance, and the prestige for the same money.

Hi sal,nice write up.
just wondered what your comments re the k reg lexus gs300 driver who said to me about my 3.6 m5 "these were a good tool in their day but this (the lexus) would slaughter it-its 300bhp you know".
I am not the kind of person to argue with that kind of comment until I am sure of my facts but on a quick web search IIRC it was about 250bhp (new from the factory) but no torque figs although the new one is 210lb per ft.
I will see him on the road one day & show him whats what but I do tthink he is talking out of his arse.

A toyota, sorry, lexus 300 is an ugly looking sad council loser cruiser of the highest order, they have a boat anchor supra engine and struggle to crack 10 sec to 60, that wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't so much mousefur, plastic wood, starlet switch gear and gold plate everywhere. nasty, nasty, nasty

Lexus doesn't have a hope. It is probably not even half as quick as an m5

I had a little play with this Lexus turd a while back at the traffic lights - I didn't even have to try hard.
On the subject of the EDC shocks - once you experience the system fitted with the switch (all EDC cars can have the switch fitted to keep it in permanent sport mode) you will never want to part with it. It is worth every penny.
It can be a wafty smooth ride when you want it to be and then a serioulsy firm bone shaker as soon as you switch it to sport mode.
The shocks can be bought considerably cheaper than Ԛ£500 if you shop around or go to Germany to purchase.
