That's real bad luck, buying a car like that only to have the timing chain snap after 200-odd miles!

Will this have caused valves to hit pistons, or is it just a case of fitting a new chain?

It will be carnage . The engine is scrap :(

The dealer will try and put an ex ebay 44,000 mile , cough , engine in it and send you on your way. F0000k that ! what happens when that engine gets growly/poos itself 10,000 miles later ? :(

FULL REFUND is the only acceptable resolution.

The engine will not be scrap!

Having repaired appox 15 of these N47 engines, some with snapped chaines and some just noisey, I can tell you now even if the valves have hit the pistons the engine will not be scrap!

The valves are vertical in the cylinder head so if there is contact the valve is forced straight up and breaks the weakest point which is the roller rocker, in some cases the camshaft carrier which is separate to the head.

Normally a new set of modifed chains, sprockets, modifed guides and replacement of the broken rockers will see it running again.
If its a pre jan 2009 BUILT car and has not previously had a repair by a BMW dealer the it will also need a crank shaft as well.

If you can't back the car to the seller then take it to a BMW dealer, pay for half hours diag (you will have to do this to make a claim outside of warranty) and submit a good will claim.

All of the ones I repaired out side the 3 year manufacturer warranty period got good will contribution from BMW UK but they all has fbmwsh like yours.

Then when it's fixed, get a BMW extended warranty!

If you have any questions let me know! Despite not working for the dealer network anymore, I have many contacts including warranty managers.

It depends on when the chain broke. If it was at speed the valve to piston impact can split the block and damaged pistons that have pinched the top ring are common. A chain break on start up can do little damage but the engine needs to be fully stripped to assess the damage. I've seen one where the chain broke and the crank whipped it round into a tangle that punched a hole in the side of the casing. Just an engine to be avoided at all costs.

Bring back the 525tds, all is forgiven!

With the latest modified set of chains and guides, the engine is great IMO.

Great performance and economy.

Agree with Andy, needs to be fully stripped to asses the damage.

If two of thee major components are damaged, crank, block or head then BMW will replace the whole engine with a new unit if repaired under warranty or good will.

Should add - a good mate is a tech at Sytners and does 2 a week. He just did a 2009 E61 with nearly 100k and it hot a full set of chains etc. Total bill was about £2500 but BMW coughed for £2100 of that.

If I had just dropped a considerable amount of for a low mileage minter I would not be happy with a 'repair' or a 'low' mileage replacement. Money back or factory replacement engine.

So that the main dealer can rip people off blind having to plug it into dealer-level only diagnostics equipment.

Nope, dealer level diagnostic equipment is available to buy at a reasonable cost.

I've had it personally for two years and have just introduced it to ML.

It blows autologic out of the water for versatility.

It's knowing how to use it properly is the key.

It's simply progress and you're right, it's no harder to use than learning how a Mac works after a PC. I had a play with it on the E46 coding a used GM5 in.
But, I just don't want to get involved or work on cars like that. We'll be in a situation before long when fitterz will be flummoxed by simple (to me) nuts and bolts stuff. Just don't mention trying to refit used M30 rocker shafts...

True that!

I've worked with guys in the dealer network and give them anything older than 15 years and they struggle.

Having said that, it's because that's all they know because that's all they've done Their whole working lives.

Small update. Spoke to bmw uk. They have told me to take it to bmw sytner birmingham. Get a diagnostic on it. And they will look into the findings. They have said the dealership will contact them. I spoke to dealership who confirmed this. They did mention a diagnostic charge of £50. Andy and bss, does this sound about right. Should I be hopefull or not get my hopes up.

Well if you have no joy backing the car to the seller then this is your best chance of getting a free/affordable satisfactory repair.

The process they have outlined is correct.

Essentially the dealer needs to confirm what has happened, submit a claim to BMW and wait for the repair to be agreed. This should only take a working day or two from diagnosis.

If the car has up to date BMW history , you have a good chance of a major goodwill contribution. Assuming you bought the car from a dealer, surely this is his problem ?

Can't get more up to date history. It was last serviced at main dealer on 23/05/2014. Called them to make sure too. If it does get fixed what are they like after repair. Is it worth keeping or pass it on?

Wasn't bought from a dealer was a private sale. Good few grand cheaper. Budgeted a chain from an Indy specialist at £850 and thought I'd be ok. My luck that it was fine no sound on test drive and drive home. Then on the drive and just gone. Was going to get chain looked at Monday morning which would have been today.

Bad luck then!

Well go down the BMW route, with a bit of luck they will contribute 100% of the cost but if you have to pay something toward the repair, at least the car was cheap to begin with and you budgeted £850 for chain replacement.

Just a load of agro early on.

Yes if they do it I'll count it a blessing in disguise. If it happened a year or so down the line I would have had less chance of goodwill. And if they want a contribution if be happy with that too but I'm not gunna tell them that obviously. Lol
