I would look a massive helmet in one, but:

After driving a 996 GT3 RS, nothing else I have ever driven has given 'that' steering feel. Interiors in normal ones are shite though.

How many roads here could you drive like that along without being worried about hitting a pothole, most of them are bad enough at half that speedJon_Bmw wrote:That is a ludicrous video! I love it. Passing someone at 180mph, respect. It was the time he was travelling at that speed that is remarkable, he would have done nigh on 9 miles and only passed one car.
Also, an 850CSi is not within Simons budget.
Agreed an E46 M3 and and E39 M5 are not special but the Simon has a special E30 to tick that box.

The Z3 M coupe because it looks like a freak compared to the rest. Followed one for a number of miles on the M25 today, they just look more interesting than most cars I've seen today

I really like the Z3 M, I did a lot of work on one a while back. And got really attached to it. They're a handful in the wet though!
If it was my money though, I'd be looking for an E46 M3. If I wasn't saving for a deposit for a house I'd of bought one by now.

Not in a munich legends budget
We all know it will be a ropey old M5 at some point, the rest is a pipe dream! I prefer really stuff thats a bit more under the radar. No one glances twice at the e34 in black, apart from that traffic cop this one time.............
Z3 might be a bit too look at me

Z3m is probably one of the worst cars BMW made, can't stand the way they drive, the awful driving position and the e36/e30 chassis split just can't handle the loads. Of course not many heros driving these cars.
Z3s are horrible. Id say its a toss up between the E39 and the E46, E46 M3s feel ballistic to drive especially with the SMG, very raw

If you want torque, buy electric. E46 M3 or a modern alpina diesel would be my poison.
What are your opinions on the E26 M1, specifically with regard to chassis balance, braking etc ?verde wrote:Z3s are horrible. Id say its a toss up between the E39 and the E46, E46 M3s feel ballistic to drive especially with the SMG, very raw
Strange as the S54 used in the later Z3M was also used in the E46 M3 and the S50 used in the earlier Z3M has almost the same torque as the S54.timmzey wrote:I'd be straight on the Z3M Coupe.
I too had the E46 M3 and was VERY disappointed by the lack of Torque.
I've had the 2.8 Z3 which I adorned, so I couldn't imagine how good the Z3M Coupe would be.

The irony of the best ever selling alpina........
The biturbo is not a remapped 320d, nor is it boring, I think a hanging five cylinder E34 is boring

No, the D3 Bi turbo is a remapped 123d engine in an E9x body.
The single turbo D3 Alpina E9x was a more comprehensive conversion.

Why did you delete your other post?
True we are not, but since your weapon of choice is a five cylinder E34, I think we can take your boring comment with a pinch of salt.
Plus an E34 is on the list........

I think a D3 is an interesting choice, they're all manual and coming in touring flavour. We could afford one, so i'm told they rev like a petrol engine and the handling suspension setup makes them the best e90 from factory. I've not heard a bad word about them from anyone. I'd like to drive one first
The Bi turbo variants are hanging onto their values very well also and well out of budget.
e39 alpina? They all appeal in a way, but the V8's are auto only. This is the problem with the newer alpinas bar the D3's its all auto or DCT etc

A D3 is deffo not the best E9x from the factory.
Anyway, Any more thoughts on this Simon?
Now owned an E39 M5 for 3 years and not found it to be a money pit. Seem to remember the E46 M3 is actually more expensive to service.
Biggest problem is, what on earth do you replace it with once it's time to change? How do you beat something that good for less than £10k.
Love the look of E34 M5 but a bit long in the tooth for a practical family car.

thoughts on what an I3?
I've just realised there are 3 MOT's this month! The e46 is fine i think, the e36 needs rear tyres and shocks at least and a jacking point welded maybe.........
The B10 is fine MOT wise just has some niggles to sort out, but thats normal for it i've learned. The lastest is to drain the battery in under 24hrs. Impressive
