How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Get yourself one of the greatest BMWs ever produced.rrs wrote:I'm not really looking for something fast, just something a bit special from the 'right' era that I'll want to keep for as long as I can and the M5 seems to be ticking that box. Will try and pick up the buying guide tomorrow
Get yourself one of the greatest BMW Ms ever produced which even beat the outgoing E92 M3, E60 M5 according to Evo Magazine
Get yourself if you are in it for the long-term.........drum roll please........
A properly original immaculate concours BMW E39 M5.

And unlike the E36 M3s they actually make the quoted power outputs... mine has been on the dyno on 2 separate occasions a few years apart and made 341bhp and 343bhp.Simon13 wrote:They're still a fast car 300bhp shifts alot of car like an e34 bloody quick plus, they're truly built like a panzer tank, an e36 seems like a fiat uno compared.

E36 M3 Evolutions in my opinion are the poor relation of the BMW M Family. It never received great reviews by the motoring press. They had alot of badge and a decent road car though quite a good engine.
Contrast that with the reviews by the motoring press for the E30 and ANY E46.
Some people think E36 might be "classics" in the future. Well a very vast majority have high owners, high mileage, crashed, abused, poorly maintained, modified. Finding a really good immaculate one would be hard. Though if you want to thrash one there are plenty of thrashed ones to choose from. Alot of the buyers/owners of these sadly moved on to the E46.
If you want a proper 5 series classic - which is far easier to find........than E28, E34 3.8 LE, choose the E39. Prices are much more affordable now. There are really good ones out there even now. It received praise and won group tests in a way the E36 M3 Coupe/E36 M3 Evolution Coupe could only DREAM about.
I rest my case.

what a load of rubbish.
the initial e36 reviews weren't amazing because everyone expected it to feel like an e30, which is half way between a sports car and a normal car. it was never bmws intention to build a car like that. they upped the space and refinement and turned the m3 into more of a gt car.
in it's day the e36 (or any spec) was always praised as the drivers choice in group tests against it's direct rivals, the e36 similarly was often hightly praised amongst it's peers and often got included in 'best handling' type tests. i seem to remember one of the magazines founf the e36 m3 quicker around goodwood than a honda nsx.
the e36 m3 is a good car, it's just been forgotten as it never had the 'IT' factor of both the e30 m3 before, and the e46 m3 that followed.

You need to ask yourself why the E36/E46 had such different receptions when in real-world terms they are about as fast as each other?harry_p wrote:the e36 m3 is a good car, it's just been forgotten as it never had the 'IT' factor of both the e30 m3 before, and the e46 m3 that followed.

Just like the E30 M3 then. There are only a handful of these left which are any good as opposed to cars which are basically bangers which have rusted/welded to buggery, done 8 million Ring laps etc etc.pony wrote: Well a very vast majority have high owners, high mileage, crashed, abused, poorly maintained, modified. You've driven both an E36 M3 and an E39 M5 right?

Blitz thanks for that.
To update this I bought a copy of the buyers guide
and that's been a big dose of reality. Honestly I don't think I can afford to run one and give it the attention it needs especially as I want to buy house in the near future.
I'm still considering what I want to do ultimately as the paranoia about leaving the e30 places is not going to go away. I'm wondering about a 525 sport, Blitz how is yours on fuel out of interest? and also thought maybe a 1 series coupe but think I've discounted that for lack of tinkering ability. Can anyone confirm if e34's have ews and are they more secure than e30's ? Otherwise I might as well stay where I am and just spend the cash on the e30 I'm thinking.

I've owned a e36 m3 3.0 which I loved and a e39 m5 which have now both been replaced by a new Audi a1 for the mrs
The e39 m5 is truly an epic car but costs a fortune to run grand plus for tyres, 250 quid for a wheel beating etc. The m3 was cheap thrills compared to an m5 and at there current price a complete bargain. That said I sold my 2002 m5 with 90k and all the toys for £7k!

Mines not to bad on fuel. Early to mid 30's on a run. But its really not that fast. Late E34's have EWS. I think built date 1995>rrs wrote:Blitz thanks for that.

A 540i is a good alternative to the M5.

The M3 to buy now is the 3.0 saloon. There are still a few decent ones out there and considering the performance, they're for nothing. Four grand will buy a really sweet one.

A good 3.0 is better than a bad 3.2 just like a good 3.6 M5 is better than a bad 3.8 .
I would always choose the Evo /3.8 over the lesser models , because they are simply better cars and at this price range, more importantly, because they frag MUCH better than the lesser turds !
The biggest problem with old cars is the owners !

The biggest problem with old cars is the owners !The sad reality is that most people who can afford to run/ PROPERLY maintain a serious chariot don't drive 15 + year old cars. That leaves them to spivs / council types/pennilesss vermin and 'enthusiasts'
