If BMW wanted a money earner, they would be well advised to start producing new E30 shells. Start with 2 doors and M3's as they would be the big sellers. Never mind welding up rusty old shit and stitching new roof skins on, a brand new shell in zinc primer for £3500 would sell like hot cakes for restorations and new builds.
Heritage proved in with the various MG/Triumph stuff and in the US, a company has been licenced by Ford and GM to make new Mustang and Camaro shells. They don't do it for love!

I would snap up a shell or two!
Would also kill the value in rusty/bent/nicked M3 shells!

Why do they do that shit? It;s so annoying! Seriously - the could have gifted the tooling to some small outfit to knock out a few thousand shells a year as said.
What's the point?

from what I know and it all maybe rubbish but they were destroyed very soon after being dismantled. The Board may have been worried about someone knocking out more shells a few years down the line but, will be kicking themselves now.
Surely they knew how long these cars would last?
So now the 3.5K will goto 5K as the cost of setting up a line for it will be crazy.
I'm sure some little industrious outfit will come up with something if the demand was high enough?

You could still buy a new shell in '98. Most panels to make up a shell are available.

its just the most bit that is raising my hairs.
How much would it cost to have a panel beaten into shape for the ones that are NLA?
Then again how much are some of the OEM ones?

Group buy?

id be suprised if they had destroyed them, i was under the impression bmw were one of the few companies that kept a lot of their tooling.
they must have kept the 2002 etc tooling, as their producing them again.
unlike ford who sell off there tooling instantly and then when the bits are gone there gone.
they wont even do runs of really useful things that lots of people need like the rs turbos oil adapter t piece.
hence why mk1 bits are astro-fucking-nominal prices.

one order for a new M3 shell for me please
I would SO like to find an old stock new shell which has been properly stored and do a slow but painfully thorough shell swap/rebuild.

No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

I cant understand you deviants and your fetish for 2 door turds, you dont need a new 2 door shell......................
What you need is a well looked after original 4 door shell, they are the future, well they would be if you wronguns stopped fragging the perfectly good ones to help eke out a few more years of clutching an MOT for your rotten 2 door turds.
You'll all realise this in a few years as you boys shed a tear through your crumbling rear inner arches.............................

Nope, not heard, any accidents round here are usually on that long and straight narrow road, idiots driving too fast basically, shops and houses only a few feet from the kerb, somebody was killed outside the school a few years ago minding his own business walking home along the path and some shithead in a saxo climbs the kerb at speed and hits him.
Yet the 'safety cameras' are all out on the dual carriageways with no schools in sight....
The council are planning to put speed humps down the road now

there was a piece in The Sunday Times yesterday on BMW now making every part available (at a cost), it was speculating about people building new 507's from parts

You can buy them over here, i often see new reg bay window campers, they also used to import the beetle

you can get a bay window panel van for 17k not bad if you ask me, they have a 1.4 watercooled engine out of a fox iirc

They should make them as a Kit car... You buy the shell and all the parts and put it together yourself...
How good would that be? Dont caterham do that?

BMW classics service is now available for the first time in the UK in Park Lane. Apparently it cost 100,000 euros to do a 3.0 CSL. I think it might be better to give it to a restoration specialist.

They stopped them (The Citi Golf) earlier this year. The tooling was worn out and demand fading but even so, a 36 year production run is impressive. The Mini only just made it past 40 years.Alex wrote:The Mk1 golf is being produced in Sa however my cousin who lives over there was telling me there going to stop, they may even be stopped nowGeorge_Of_The_Jungle wrote:Arent they still making new mk1 golfs, and new bay window camper vans in mexico?
