A manual M50 525 isn't sluggish, suits the car perfectly - an M20'd E34 is !
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.

Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

It is an M50'd E34. Feels sluggish to me, the E34 is quite a barge to get going...

It is, depends on what your used to I suppose - the current 320 I'm in feels light as a feather compared to the 728 E38 I've just sold!

The V8 530 & 540 add even more weight to the old E34's but quite a bit more umph

Well I've been smoking around in an E30 325i Touring for a couple of weeks now and an E36 M3 Evo for 4 months before that and the 34 feels slower than both those - no competion with the M3 so a little unfair to be honest!

The thing drives beautifully but its just lacking power, perhaps its a lemon....!

The e30 is quite a bit lighter and the e36 M3? Well thats another level.

The vanos 2.5 34's went well for what they were. Mine was an auto and that was still very capable. But they are a heavy barge. It only has 21 bhp more than the e30 325 but the extra weight will deal with that.

A lot of late eighties metal still looks good if in utterly mint nick - Alfa 164, Vauxhall Senator (with the egg crate grille), W124 300E Benz. I'd even give a nod of respect for a perfect 825i Starling :D in gloss black.
These are cars which ONLY look good when in perfect standard condition. Any 'accessories' or rust/wrongness and they look like council scrap.

In that context an E34 still looks okay.
