Maybe we should offer a prize of a gold plated paedo pellet (werthers) dispenser/ tissue box to the first E38 owner who can offer the correct answer !

All i'm saying is that the E38 is the flagship model from the manufacturer that we are all acknowledging on here builds brilliant cars. The E38 is the best 7 series imo so i'm not sure what some people are annoyed about.
However if i'm missing something then please feel free to explain.
However if i'm missing something then please feel free to explain.
It was the flagship, 10 years ago. But when it was new, it didn't have an Irish plate, angel eyes, Enger-Land number plates and roller skate wheels. Those have been added as the resale value plummeted to around 5% of it's new cost in the mistaken belief that it looked good or 'classy'. It doesn't. It looks like a 10 year old £1500 7 Series with some 'accessories' stapled on. A bog standard E38 just about has some dignity but everyone knows they're down to £600 in the Autotrader.
An ideal analogy is a Gyspy caravan, and how they're festooned with murals and shiny brass bits. Still, it's not mine.

Well if thats the way you see it, you are entitled to your opinion. You still get a lot of kit for the "£600" and it is very likey to still be working. Anyway, if you do find one with the same seats with the heated option in your estate for £600.00 please let me know, I'll take it too.
However I do believe if you look at the real trader (or at least outside your estate) you'll find the seats alone (which on ours are factory fitted and not "add ons") are very hard to find never mind the complete car for £600.00.
Nevertheless I still believe the e38 shape 7 series is still the best flagship model from BMW to date and much better than the current version. With regards to the "add ons", we all like to customise our cars to make them look like we want them to. Just as many people on this forum are doing to their over 10 year old e30's. You may choose not to do with yours but thats up to you. The fact of the matter is the genuine 20" alpina's are definately worth more than some e30's and definately the e38's on your estate, the fact that they are genuine says it all.

I bought a 2 owner total spec '96 750il with FSH 18 months ago for £500. It was a real physical car seen at the Ace , in a Total BMW buyers guide and elsewhere. I spent £50 fixing the TV and served it quick for a 'small' profit before it bit me on the 4rse
Alas in these days of £1.25 per litre fuel costs , cars of this genre are rather unloved. Combine this with the potential for financial ruin that goes hand in hand with running a once 50-70k car that now is firmly entrenched in the banger underworld, make E38 ownership the preserve of the lucky, the brave and the terminally council

I don't live on an estate btw, hence the lack of E38's.........
ok mate, firstly the 'L' versions, kitted with toys as much as they are, do not come with the seats shown above.pacerpete wrote:

Secondly the 750's i'm sure you will agree when they were new were made for the "big timers" of the day that could afford to run them. I agree that in todays time they have depreciated substantially due to the fact that not very many people will be able to afford to run and maintain them. Those that could afford to do it now and back in the day could probably afford to get a newer car.
In any case, for £500.00, how many other cars do you know that would have come as solidly built, full leather, sat nav and tv, cruise control, a/c, full electrics plus others for this money.
The normal person, and if you wanted to keep the car, would have purchased a more reasonable engined 7 series which won't cost the earth at the pumps to move you. These are not going to be as cheap as the one you got due to them being easier to run and therefore appeal to more people than the 750.
We use ours (3.5 V eight) which has appropriate power for cruising and munching motorway miles and still returns near 30mpg. Now as I said, for cruising, taking 3 kids in child seats and 2 adults on the motorway plus a massive boot for all luggage (push chairs included) for 3 kids under 5 years, it is definately the quitest and feels the safest on the motorway that I have driven.
We've had ours for 2 years now and it hasn't missed a beat, hasn't costs us a fortune to run, other than the accesories we've added, we've just paid for normal servicing and MOT and tax bills, it costs about the same to insure as my Supra and thats for me, my wife, my dad and Faz albeit with a decent amount of NCD.
Oh yeah, and although ours has a "smaller" engine and weighs quite a bit thanks to the kit, It doesn't have any problem moving off at the lights when it needs to either

Well our "turd" is going to be bigger, have more in it, and is now going to be more "glitzy" than most peoples and if you do want to compare it to a "turd", this one can be polished tooAndyboy wrote:

i love the e38 its a great car especially when you can pick them up for much cheapness just budget a bit to sort any bodge work they may have had and the e32 is just as good imo.
when im in the market for another daily driver a 7 series is very high on the list next to another e39 as the last e39 i had was definetly one of the best cars i have owned.

Insurance, running costs and availability to start with.
The E38 alpina is a good looking car but just as the e30 M3 or the e30 sports, for many reasons when people can't get the originals they'll customise they're own to replicate how they would want their car to look.
As in our case, the e38 alpina is good looking but the engine is too big for our needs, we found a suitable car and added the alpina bits. If there was an e38 alpina with the 3.5 or something suitable for the average person then maybe we could have an original.

I dont think its to do with the engine size, Alpina E38's can be multiple times more expensive then normal E38's.

There's a couple of B10 3.2/3.3's and some 4.6's, a couple of Z4 variants IIRC,an E32,an E21 but most of them are B3's unfortunately

The engine size issue is to imply the running costs of such car would be significantly more, i'm sure you'd agree with the e38 6.0 v12.
I do agree they are expensive to get in the first place but that is likely to be due to their exclusiveness.
