Right seeing as a ring trip is in May, my waterpump looks original. I'm not wanting to take chances so i've been hunting for water pumps.
BMW want £300+VAT then there is £60 surcharge if you bring your old one back. I'm not finding any of the usual companys supplying these
I've this in the fatherland, anyone heard of firstline being any good?

there are other pumps on there for less, like 70 euro for some italian brand one!

So not all bad? My plan is to retire my original pump and take it as a spare.
With a new radiator its got i should be good cooling wise.
just struggling to find an uprated brake pad for the 4 pots on the front. Suspension is good enough out of the box as is engine. Just some brake tinkering to be ready for the green hell. Can't wait.

Yes I priced up a water pump for my M5 as well from GSF and it was first line. I'd never heard of them so was unsure too.

If its anything like their handbrake cables it will be shit! Are there any decent aftermarket brands of handbrake cables anymore or are they all made in china by people with their eyes closed?
I kept the water pump off my V8 as I was going to look at replacing the bearings, there must be an off the shelf bearing as its the only bit that wears and thats all BMW do with your surcharge returned part

I did that once with a Ford Ka auxilliary belt tensioner; £130 for a new item from Ford, and £30 to buy a replacement standard bearing and get it pressed in at a local engineering firm, thus a princely saving of £100.

They are going well!
Progress has been far to slow due to the usual going to work, wifes, babies and a very long lasting season in my flagging ice hockey career all getting in the bloody way, but shes getting very close to being ready for MOT re test and the impending ring trip!
Anyhow

I relented in the end and changed the breather pipe so all 3 fuel lines are brand spankers. It was a good call as the original pipe broke into at least 3 pieces upon removal! Bar the fuel pump the entire system has been overhauled now i think

Along with changing the A/C seals for the condensor it appeared that there were also leaks here on both charge point valves. So new ones here and seals elsewhere and i hope i have a lasting working A/C now.

exhaust system is back on and now will come off again without a drama! I had to get inventive and copy E24mans idea for one side with the turbo downpipe joiner as the joiners were simply fucked to be blunt.
Lastly onto the brakes something i think we can improve on slightly

The ring isn't massively hard on your brakes but the late 6 speeds have this great setup from factory so this lot should really get the middle peddle working as it should.
Some ATE superblue or this "type 200" as some nobbas have banned dye in brake fluid now.
Ferrodo DS 2500 front pads
Goodridge lines with stainless ends and some gay blue sheathing which i thought why not! They'll be black in a year
Some new caliper nipples to replace the knarly ones.

So the lines went on ok, the fluid is bled through. So just a case of bedding the pads in. The rears i hope will last the trip, might take some spare pads! The front discs are new so i'm good here i think. I'm excited to see how she performs now
Onto what you all love the mig welding action

Drivers side getting close to completion, the grot ran a long way along the seal

And you always find more to sort! Well i didn't on this occasion
Theres more mechanical action to go that i can complete at home. I really want it back now

Looking good Simon, progress indeed, looking forward to a passenger lap ;)
If I'd had a brake pipe flaring tool, yes. Did the engine swap and neglected to do the real bastard lines behind the engine.Simon13 wrote:Couldn't you do them Andy?
If i had more time, i'd of changed all the brake/SLS lines into kunifer. Maybe another time.
Then the local parts place bollocksed up a load of them so got matey round to do them. The over tank ones and the S ones on the trailing arms look good but the ones behind the engine were a right cow. May redo them myself.

More welding pics which everyone seems to like! Henry has been raising the bar again

Grot around the EDC grommet

Lovely lovely job,
This next one is a new grot point i've not seen on an e34 before myself and appeared after removing the arch liner, i'd of never have known it was there with the liner fitted as it totally covers it all up

Bit of a nasty place in some respects and a defo MOT fail!

~All from some flakey underseal, like always!

This is all i have but i think the repair here is complete, i'll find out when i take a look tomorrow when i'm up the unit. Also the floorpans are both finished but again no picture yet
Its all coming together nicely and i'm hoping to bring her home over Easter weekend which excites me! Still lots to do before trip but i can crack on with the rest on my driveway
Outstanding work Henry, we doff our hats

Come last easter Friday i got myself dropped off at the unit knowing i had to be out that day as it was deadline day! which meant finishing off the mechanical bits whilst being the ramp made things 100 times easier and bolting the wings, skirts and the whole car back into one piece

various bits of the bodywork finished, the avus blue paint i bought is rather bright! Fab job by Henry on the old tram so thanks again

Engine mounts, heavy old engine to be slinging around the ring. The old ones weren't too bad and still in one piece

Inpection of the auxillary belts showed the waterpump/alternator belt to be a bit sad

Changed the lot for some bmw ones, at least i know they will fit!

My ferrodo front pads are wrong so i'm currently sorting this out with demon tweeks i hope as i've not got long to go now and need some decent front pads!

final one in the workshop. Just need to clear the mess tools around the car for the maiden trip home, it was raining obviously and the car needed petrol obviously!

I took these with my new mobile phone! Its got an 8meg camera i'm impressed! Well ready to go to the MOT station

One final temporary "repair" i've moved the wiper arm up as it hits the bonnet every swing and the noise drives me up the wall. The rack is well knackered

And a ticket! Tester himself just got back from the ring himself

A nice wash and some tax and this 6 speed is back in action. Trip with the family today down to the seaside!
