Another reminder of why not to buy a 3.8! The money involved for parts is just utterly insane and you can see why most of them are bangers. £1500 for a MAF is just taking the piss.
Given that the Merc MAF's look so similar, I'd be giving one a try in conjuction with a rolling road session. It may be perfectly okay and give decent fuelling. Also give the old one a spray with contact cleaner.
Bosch are/were well known for giving identical parts different numbers so they could stitch you up via the main dealers. We had an issue years ago with an Alfa 164 2.0TS that had shat a rotor arm. From Alfa it was £156 with the distributor (!) and Bosch gave a different part number for the rotor that was not available aftermarket. Just so happens that a VW VR6 one was identical and was about 14 quid. The Bosch geezer at the importers (Camberley Auto Factors?) said they did this all the time.
I wouldn't mind putting a tenner on the 420 Merc MAF being identical.

There is a list on the Alfa romeo forum that compares part numbers for bosch stuff....it gives you the numbers for where the same part is used across different brands...

forgot the link

you can cross reference using BMW's part number, then using the comparison feature, see where else the same part is used on other makes of vehicle.....

Today i picked this up which nicely replaces my unstuck original.
I've also picked up a spare orginal MAF, off a 116,000 mile car. So not new but with some good service left in and plus having a spare won't hurt. Until the MAF situation improves for 3.8 cars in someway. The car is defo a little more zingy on the top end i feel revs harder on the top end i feel.
Then onto my favourite fix of the day

As stated before my cruise control suddenly sprung into life literally. But i'm now thinking this was the fault i had all along. When it wasn't working correctly if at all.
Where my fingernail is pointing this should be flat not bent over like so, this was jamming or causing obstruction or both. Anyhow i guess it is my fitting error that may have caused it. I've a spare actuator in stock and voila i've perfectly functioning cruise control now after an extended test drive it and feels as it should to me now.
Whilst on the subject where i collected the MAF from today was a 70 mile drive to which a steady plod @80 with the cruise on yeilded a heady 30.4 mpg on the OBC! And after some enthusiastic MAF "testing" and the trip home was on 27. Economy the bi-turbo could only dream of!
Which made me think, the e34 has the biggest fuel tank of any M5 produced at 90 litres i think. Also if it will do a genuine ish 30 mpg or there abouts on a run with the cruise control on means it gives the e34 the best cruising range of all the M5s. Sad but interesting..........to me

So this week has been air con time as its the right time of year

I whipped the bumper off and trim for a good inspection of the fan, condensor and much to my surprise the fan is unseized and the condensor looks to be in very good condition. Result, as its an M5 specific item i learnt this week. I unplugged the fan and gave it 12 volts up its chuff to see if its working on both speeds which it is, someone has in the past replaced the resistor in the past as there is cut wires and heat shrink evident. Nice to see a decent electrical repair for once instead of sctotch locks and electrical tape!
Its also just dirty under here and not all crusty on the edges like i guess cars with alot of winter driving end up like

So i've took a chance and just changed the dryer and pressure switch and a take a chance on the gas up
The compressor also moves nice and freely so in theory it should go again?

Upto my local tyre place yesterday as they'll gas my aircon for me for a nice crisp £20 note. Lovely chaps they are
First off was to see if the system held pressure with some nitrogen gas at 10bar for 5 mins and see it holds. Which it did so then it was onwards and the 40 odd minute wait it takes the machine to do its thing
And we now have some nice cold Air con again! I don't know how many years its not worked for but there appears to be a tiny leak from the smaller charge point valve. Being a 94 car it looks like it may have been R12 from factory? As it has the 134a valves screwed on. I've got spare a brand new valve any how so i'll see how it lasts and i may have to change that valve and it should be 100%
So thats another job kind of done and shes coming back to full health nicely now, all the electric windows work ok along with the sunroof, check control doesn't throw up random faults, cruise control added and now the a/c is working its becoming more like an M5 by the week. Still lots to do though

Rear blind time! I've a major fetish for shelf/door blinds and i bought this one off m-sport a few months ago but had a crack yesterday at fitting it. e34 shelfs are the same moulding whether its got a blind or not so it was time to crack on mark it up and cut my shelf

hole cut, i cut the cloth out with a knife and then i cut the shelf with my 4 inch grinder with a 1mm cutting blade, worked a treat

blind fitted in not too bad, but i can't get the end clips in properly so i'll need another go later on to get it perfect

And shes in and up, next up is door blinds which i'm working on as we speak.

Found this? Ski hatch bag option thing?

I also remembered i had a fire extinguisher bracket and spare bottle so another trinket.
Dare i say it the grey cloth trim is growing on me
There are a couple of products out there designed for alcantara, the idea is not to saturate it, I've had success with regular interior shampoo in the past, low foam machine products work best here in my opinion, basically stuff for machine use, I'll come and do it for you soon and break out the wet vac on seats and carpet.

yeah the brackets for the clips are there in the shell, you just "bend" the headlining down a bit and you'll see it.M-Sport wrote:Did you have to pull roof lining down to get the blind clip in place Si?
Need to do the same mod on my m5 so thanks for sharing
Nice offer powells should be good. The previous owner said he had some new OEM floor mats and a new 6 speed gearnob with illumination! i'll chase him up now its new year.

Ok so today i changed the oil+filter and i turned the ignition on to note the milege for my service record and the sump was empty of oil. The gong chimed "engine oil low"
I thought ok fair enough, now i've filled her back up with oil and its still chirping me this messege, so have i killed the sensor by turning the ignition on when the sump was empty?! It won't go away it now even though oil level is ok!

Yes you have killed it as the sensor is essentialy a heated element which the oil cools so if there is no oil it burns out.
Well not really, just don't leave the ignition on when draining oil.
Happy days.
Thinking about it, I don't think E34's work on the principle I mentioned, pretty sure they as the same as an E30.
The E39/E46 onward that are the heater element type.

I thought the sills had been welded up in bobs time with it?

They have, it appears they only welded the outside of the sills and skipped any of the inside work.
I've got lots of pictures to digest and too many beers mean i'm not functioning correctly at the moment for a picture fest.
Nearly sorted out some door blinds on more pressing matters

You can, but wiring the horn in can be an absolute nightmare. They are supposed to take the earth from the steering column but very often they just won't have it. My Compact has a horn switch on the dash as the steering column refuses to earth to the body.

Well i was having fun with my door blinds project, but its kind of been put hold as an MOT fail has ment some more serious work.

We've ended up here a no doubt familiar place for my e34's
So failed on nearside floorpan
advised on
offside floor pan sill area
rusty fuel lines
windscreen chips
1 brake pipe slightly corroded.
So off with the sill coveres, now this was welded up in these areas 1-2 years ago

So nothing too tragic from the outside as you might expect. Its had a genuine replacement wing in the past too i've discovered so its solid, the original is the usual crusty at the bottom.

Being a northern car originally its looking pretty good i'd say overall underneath. As always the jobs spread and she could do with some good old car maintenance

Diff has an oil leak on the backplate and the pinion oil seal also.

grisly fuels lines i decided to replace, which in short has been a mission as i've literally had to grind a slot into every screw head as they were rusted in to get them moving. Which has meant diff removal (coming out anyway) and the drive shaft one side, dropping the beam down also to get the new lines in.

Grim, system still has life in it but this is the worst area

Ah a leak on the A/C but some seals should cure this along with a new charge point valve. See if it all holds then!

Some new pitman arms as they looked to be sad originals. I'll do the subframe bushes too later as they're a bit soft, and an odd pair also.

Getting the new lines in for the pipes and new clips £120! The breather pipe isn't too bad so i've left it

these clips are a silly £5 each and i needed all 3. New fuel filter while we are here. Seems easy but its been a ballache as per usual

Onto these rather heavy diffs, this is my method of undoing the bolt

new seal in

Nut on and re tightened

New gasket, and i've changed the oil while i'm here

The beast ready to re install. Its in not sure how i did it on my own but it was tiring!

New gasket here to keep the grease in. Cleaned most of the old stuff out and added some new in
Onto the welding which Henry is undertaking! Very nice chap

Quick clean up, this is the side i poked a hole in............i wonder it will grow in size?!

Sure has!!

Quite a bit cut out and the thing is the previous bodyshop would of known this was here as they're talents extended to welding metal to rust which is quite a feat as those who can weld will know.

This is the repair so far and as far as we are with it at the moment.

Very much working progress still
I'm hoping to take it to the ring in May so theres still a fair bit more i want to do before we go, but its MOT first.
Should be an epic tram round the ring so i'm mega looking forward to it in an original ring taxi variant!

Ta,
I've not got as much time as i'd like with work, family and my hockey season still in full swing the cars have to take a back seat over winter. I've been pinching an hour or two here and there but its rained alot this week so i've been able to hit it.
I'd like to keep this one for a while and need to get it up to scratch as my e30 will be taking priority after
