Alpina B10 Bi turbo, this car is haunting me 11/2/15

Piloting an E34 in the bends is akin to steering the good ship SS great Briton in a gale force sea storm.

Ok deal take me for a ride in your AlpinaSimon13 wrote:i'm not locking horns. Just jesting, would be nice to have a drag race up santa pod just to pit such cars and see whats what. There won't be anyone else bringing one along to give some ********* up there but there will be 100 e46 m3's![]()
Soni come to guildford next thurs and we can see how epic the lack of turbo lag is. I'll take you out. Its no flatter than any other m-power engine at low RPMS tbh in my experience bar say the V8 M5. Which gets up and goes in any gear at any rpm.
The e46 was geared up to keep it infront of the e36 version. 3.64 vs 3.23. Due to the weight gain the car has over the e36 and the fact bmw could only squeeze 20 odd more ponies out of the old S50 donk.

Yeah and what engine beat the 996 flat sixes and 360 Modena engines in the International Engine of the Year Awards 3-4 litre category in 2001 - 2006 ....Andyboy wrote:I've heard they split in half right down the middle and fall in half.DanThe wrote:E46 diffs do so much work they rip the back ends apart, FACT!
Which m3 did BMW Car mag say is the best BMW ever ? Which is the best road going version ? Yes same power and mass but there is an improvement in steering and brakes. And what is Evo's opinion ? Have u ever owned a M3 CS ?
The car I had the most ever adrenaline rush in was actually when I was a passenger in 2001 in my school friend's dad 911 Turbo (964) 3.3 litre. I think the E46 M3 according to the numbers is quicker 0-100 but when the turbo kicked in really did feel like a roller coaster. I was raving about it for weeks and the E46 M3 Coupe had just come out. Was at the time the fastest I car I ever sat in. I have had a ride in or driven cars with more bhp but that gave the biggest thrill for me when the turbo kicked in hence the adrenaline was so exciting

Given that the 996 engine is the most unreliable, poorly developed piece of junk Porsche have ever made , that is what is known as damning with faint praise.pony wrote:Yeah and what engine beat the 996 flat sixes and 360 Modena engines in the International Engine of the Year Awards 3-4 litre category in 2001 - 2006 ....Andyboy wrote:I've heard they split in half right down the middle and fall in half.DanThe wrote:E46 diffs do so much work they rip the back ends apart, FACT!

The S54 is a very good engine. It's powerful, reliable and good on fuel. But it doesn't have two turbos and thus the sheer thrust that onlt a turbo engine can give. You've not driven one so you don 't understand but a 964 turbo is an education.
Not owned a CS but it's only s regular M3 with some bits on, unlike a CSL.

I managed a spec check on this just out of interest yesterday
So its comes up as a bi turbo on bmws system with lots of warning! like alpinas do
built 8th sept 92 it was PDI'd by alpina themselves in oct 92.
Supplied new to Niederlassung of Stuttgart bm dealer in 21st jan 94! So it sat around somewhere for some time? Maybe at Alpina themselves as i guess it was still recession time? i was only 10 so can't remember as well as some here might!
Running in service wasn't done until may 95 with nearly 6000kmh on it
Anyhow heres what was ticked
nation version germany/austria 535i saloon diamond black
Limited slip diff LSD
Automatic stability control ASC
Self leveling suspension SLS
leather steering wheel
deleted model lettering
shadow line
windscreen, green tint upper strip
electric sunroof
rear sun blinds and lateral
warning triangle and first aid kit
head rests rear mechanicall adjustable
headlamp washer system intensive cleaning
headlight vertical aim control
automatic air flow control
automatic air conditioning
interior light package
Radio bavaria electronic CD II - if that was a CD player its missing!
HiFi speaker system
Alpina without registration document
Alpina engine-oil cooler
special equipment BMW individual - not sure whats on there for this?
Theres no mention of cruise control or the recaro interior? must be the individual bits as i've not seen a bi turbo with out cruise control
reinforced power supply - whats that?

Is it just an alternator Barry as ive seen E34 diagrams showing an extra battery in the LH side of the boot
Why would you buy a motor like this and not take it for its running in service until 6000km?

Niederlassung means registered office/branch/establishment (in BMW context in Germany it means the state or regional HQ - for your car it'll most likely be Baden Wurtemburg) and is not the name of a dealer so it's more likely that the car was registered to BMW themselves. So possibly your car was a company car or a demonstrator originally before being retailed?Simon13 wrote:

Who knows? It wasn't in germany long really, and theres a few early services done in stuttgart and then its all UK history.
So today being to cold for brickwork meant i could have a bit of time for some B10 tinkering

Another arse end shot but theres some rust around where the boot spoiler mounts

spoiler off, rust is localised nothing nasty, but more to the point i think it looks 100 times better without the rude boy spoiler which i guess helps on the autobahn 170mph

A good wash, some new numberplates. The old sytner plates can go up on the hall of fame in the garage

the door strikers on this side needed some adjustment as the rear door looked not shut properly! So this in turn ment the front one was a bit out. You can kind of see it looks straight now, much better in the flesh

The ultimate in discretion for the uber saloon
tempting to remove alpina script also. I think i'll get another boot lid with no holes in it

I like the Alpina badge - why not distinguish it as something a bit special, rather than some anonymous plain-Jane luxo-barge?

Call me a chav - but I like the spoiler.
If it was mine I would stump up the cash for the proper badging and let everyone know what it is
Also stripe up the bugger as well
I prefer the look without the spoiler, but if it was originally specced I would be inclined to keep it that way. Anyway it's your beasty so get it how you want it Si !

Its running lean, not sure why at this moment in time. But 346bhp isn't bad going but the 400lbs is noice! This was on max boost. Min boost was 287bhp and 330lbs. Basically theres more power in it once it fueling properly. Not far off the factory figures either. Just need to work out why its running lean

Then at last a chance to get her on the ramp, wheels off for a good poke around lets see what needs doing!

Henry and Barry are photo shy

These need taking off and replating in the stock zinc/passivate. Very impressive brakes these have. Really work well

oh dear, the only real oil leak to be fair. Spotted this the other week. Lots of new SLS bits fitted. Lots of bespoke alpina bits too around the diff

Can you see the pipe in the valance, they run all the way to the diff. Keeps it cool when your doing 170mph down the autobahn for hours and hours

Turbos, theres a blow here on front turbo we think. This won't be helping the lean mixture. I'll probably start there along with possibly getting the injectors cleaned and looking for any leaks on the inlet side of things.
Could be AFM? Looking on the Alpina ETK it uses a MAF from a 3.6 european spec M5. I thought yes BMW part no listed at first! not a short alpina one. On alpina etk if its a stock BMW part fitted its an 11 digit part, no. If its an alpina only part its a short 7 digit no. with 91 47 added on the start and these no.s usually mean lots of money! Alas M-power part isn't really any cheaper! Its location is right next to turbos so its getting lots of heat all the time
Also to add to bills of owning such a car. In 5th gear on m-way today, max boost foot planted revs got to 3000rpm and the clutch slipped

Si, the blow will probably be on the rear manifold, the Bi is well known for going there, IIRC it's not a cheap fix but worthwhile doing, interesting to see they use a MAF ?
nice to see she's making good power
