virgin/telewest are very good.

Very cheap and cable internet is more reliable and has room for more expansion than adsl.

Virgin service is terribe,

When my dad died last year my sister rung them to say she would like to be the principle account holder and explained the reason why to some indian call center person.

We then got a letter through the post (addressed to my dad) saying he couldn't cancel the contract as he hadn't held the account for the minimum term of 12 months.

Another phone call, to swansea this time, an apology and promise to put it right, again a letter arrives in my sisters name so good start but thats all they'd changed account number and details the direct debit was linked to was still my dads which by this time had been returned unpaid by the bank as my dads acount had been closed by them.

So another letter arrives in my dads name demanding payment, and another phone call. I can't be arsed to write out exactly what happened next but we now only have Virgin crappy media tv and phone, despite numerous calls by myself and my sister over the last 3 months we have only just stopped getting letters in m dads name, its finally being paid for by my sister BUT.... we don't have broadband, its been cancelled from our account (according to tech support) despite the fact we are still paying for it and are completely up to date with ALL the bills.

As soon as the 12 months is over I'm going back to BT, and Sky, Virgin media (AKA NTL) are crap, and I'm sick to the back teeth of them, its theyre fauly I can't work from home, or access E30zone at home anymore either, hence I'm not online weekends anymore!

I'm disgusted with the service, the lies, and how much it has cost me and my family in greif, time and mone for phone calls to put their mistake right, 3 months later I am still trying but don't hold out much hope! M sister and aunt have been in tears explaining over and over again that my dad is dead! Don't people die in India?

I may just have to pay the Swansea call center a visit in person! They may not let me in but some one has to come out at somepoint!

still ironing out a few flaws at the moment with virgin. It will probably be very good in the future, but if you were on the old system (ntl, telewest etc) it can be a bit $hite!

This sounds familair.

I'm moving house and they couldn't have been LESS helpful if they tried.

I'm completely pissed off going to a call centre in New F**cking Deli!!!!! They are rubbish and the muppets in Manchester dont seem to be any better.

I would NEVER USE THEM AGAIN... Arrrgggh - you reminded me of how much i detest these Wankers.

Sorry, rant over -

the products are really good at the price they sell them at, however the customer service is rubbish!

VIRGIN are VVank! We were on AOL..yes ar5eholes on line and even they were better...well in some ways. I think we had 2 meg download with AOL. but since changing over to Virgin on the ridiculous we barely get anything like it. They sent my landlord an email basically saying tough 5hit. But my landlord is thick as custard and believes them that they cant do anything about it. Glad Im not paying for their services! I go wireless and use the one over the road lol!

before you make a commitment i would look very closely at the packages offered... ntl/virgin media is only avaliable in cabled areas. allot of companys i.e.... pipex/homecall, bt, aol have download limits in place. at the end of the day aol is shit so avoid like the plague. i say this because aol takes over your pc and is a bastard to remove(haveing to go deep into the registry to delete all the @ucking keys it makes) and in some cases shutting down i.e. aol can also monitor your internet usage and if you happen to be downloading a film ( something that is made by time warner, like my friend did) you will recive a letter saying if you dont delete the movie you will be in court and could be fined upto 250k.
aol, pipex, tiscaly, all use bt's lines anyway. and dont get caught with the '' download at 8mb shit'' i know people who live over the road from there exchange and can only download at 5mb!
im with bt, i have had no troubles with them. i download at 3mb and upload at just under 512kb.

they actually sent that email/letter? Sod that!
I eventually managed to get all but one item of AOL off my comp. Only thing left is the virus protection I paid extra for and dont want! Even with my registry killer I cant get shot of it

Had NTL for 3 years...never once dropped out... i download about 100Gigs a month, and keep getting free line upgrades....what more could you want???

Unless you're after super speed....I would recommend NTL..

HOWEVER...theirs, as with everyone else's service will vary depending on where you are.....!!!

As i said...mine has never once dropped out in 3 years!!!

everyone's call centre's are sh*te. Everyone's call centre's are in abu f*cking dabi, customer service is w*nk. Welcome to 21st century britain.

So go with a company where you dont need to call them every ten minutes when your '8mb' adsl line drops. Ie, virgin.

Most of the complaints I see here are when they were telelwest/ntl, and some of them sound infuriating and damn harsh!

But virgin have always prided themselves on good customer service and I vouch for that when it comes to mobile phones. I would guess they will work on the quality of service for virgin media too.

And where else can you got it so cheap, and with tv too?

16mb download speed over a phone line??

Most exchanges can only just handle 8mb and you have to be living INSIDE the exchange to achieve that.

mcafee give themselves away with everything! and they suck balls.

16mb is pretty impressive, but at a guess they will be using some sort of 'download accelerator' to achieve it... so its not proper 16mb... I may be wrong though and bt have upgraded their service.

You can still only get a maximum of 8Mb down a pair of copper cables at the moment. The main thing to look for when looking a broadband speeds is to find out the contention ratio each company offers.

For example in one telephone exchange pipex have a 100Mb link into the ADSL network which doesn't sound so bad, but it is set up to be able to carry 300 customers at anyone time, so if all 300 ports have customers connected and they are all using their broadband at once then your claimed 8Mb is actually going to be 333Kb. Obviously this is very unlikely to happen. And the fact there is only 3 customers connected in said exchange then they are going to be getting great speeds at the moment.

I've not found anywhere that can tell you these contention ratios for each ISP, but BT tends to be the best because most other ISPs are using the BT network and also tend to piggy back there ADSL equipment between several exchanges to try and make the most of the capacity they have available.

Heres a link explaining a little more about contention ratios; http://www.greenisp.net/resources_infos ... ention.htm

The word overkill springs to mind.

Its worth noting that too many scurity applications can be a negative thing. They work against each other and stop being so effective.

Not that you even need to use a firewall or av software imo. I never have.

Best antivirus software i have come across is Avast, gets top ratings and reviews and best of all it is free for home use!! I've never had a single problem with, not a single virus and you hardly notice it running! I know many people as well that have converted to using this and none have had any trouble at all.

Another note for people with speed issues when using wireless, instead of using the free router you get upgrade to a netgear one, i've known these almost double peoples bandwidth. I certainly plan to do it in the near future.
