Where on a e36 are the

chassis numbers I have found one on the dash behind the windscreen but where is the metal plate one??

There is not a metal plated one like the e30, there is a sticker under the bonnet and also should be stamped on the front suspension turret.

All E36 cars have the Chassie number on the top of the bulk head on the divers side of the car, look directly at the back scuttle panel and you will see it.

The early cars have the stamp on the bulk head and a id tag behind the front windscreen on the left hand side, and also a Vin plate on the upper inner wing towards the windscreen on the drivers side.

The Later cars 96 onwards have the stamp on the bulk head and a id tag behind the front windscreen on the left hand side, and also a Vin sticker on the suspension turret on the drivers side.

If you see a car without the Vin number on the top on the bulk head on the scuttle panel then walk away.

Vin plate and Vin Sticker can be orderd through BMW with the log book and proof of ownership.

(So look for the Bulk head and windscreen vin tags, to be sure about the car)

I have had all the e36 models apart from a M3 and a touring model.
I also break BMW from time to time so I see them all the time.
