Any good?
My Dad's Audi has done big miles now, and he's been offered the above for a reasonable price. It's an SE with all the bits, done 38k, history etc.
The only thing I'm concerned about it that it'll be out of warranty soon.
Are they reliable? Decent?

Great cars, pick up in these is unbelievable, If he could stretch to a 530d or even a 535d then go for them. My dads mate has a 535d and its unbelievabally fast. 525d though is still nice and going off previous model 525d's i'd say he'll have no problems with it.

Well he would consider others (maybe) but he's just thinking about it because it's from a friend.
He's looking for £16k, which is what he's been offered trade in. Book price is about £18k?

It must be one of the last in the old shape.
16k sounds alot to me, as the shape has only just changed.
I paid 4k for mine 98 on a S, 2 owners 100,000 miles.
Im well pleased with it.
Ive just won a lighting upgrade kit, to the later lights, on egay.
Getting cheap some of these 5's.

have you fitted them yet................they are shite..............my dads old e39 (later car with the angel lights) were worse than my e30' smiley's
they had a shit beam on them
Not got them yet Chris.
This is the kit..

The headlights are not that great now, so this kit has to be an improvement.
It will really transform the cars look.

the fronts always did look the balls, but my dad thought ( and i agreed) that the pre facelift lights seemed better than the later angels, they just didn't seem as bright, and didn't shine as far up the road, you might be able to play with the mech to get them to point up over more...........he didn't want to as the car was still in warrenty at the time so didn't want to bodge stuff.
Dave; get your Dad to try a 520d. Loads of torque (more than a 535i), six speed manual and really good to drive. they don't give a lot away to the 525d which is almost a waste of time, might as well get a 530d if he needs six pots. 520dSE with 17's, PDC, cruise, autodip mirrors etc as standard is £26'000 brand new with the warranty. I thought it would be a bit iffy until I drove one and I was mightily impressed. 40+ mpg as well.
where i work we have a e39 5 series on a 06 plate and most of the fleet are 54 reg e39 530d so there are still a lot around in the older e39 shape .....go for the 530d we do the occasional turbo but a big part of that is how its driven from cold they dont like being blatted from cold but consumption is good and with hard driving they will still return 16s
If your dad deciced to go for the lesser 520d it doesnt have much less power than the 525d like Andyboy said. I think if he were to go for the 520d though, then he might aswell go for the 320d unless it is for the size he wants it for. 530d offers an impressive 218 bhp if he could stretch to that and the 535d has about 277 bhp

The main thing is it's being offered by a reliable source, someone we know, so that's why it's tempting.
3 series is a bit small, and he'd prefer 6 pots, we'll have to see, he's having a look today. If it was a 530 then game on, but it's a 2.5
