no need to get under the car... pull back the handbrake gator and there are 2 bolts either side which just need tightening. to do the handbrake on a e36 should take no longer than 5-10 mins.
that includes washing your hands after!!

e30 also has adjusters on the lever
but its advisable to do it properly at the rear wheel adjusters rather than lever
as you may stretch the cables and snap cable
would guess that an e36 also has adjusters at the wheels too

drums or discs should be the same.
shine a tourch in hrough one of the wheel bolt hole and either at 12oclock or 6oclock there should be a cog.
push a flat head screwdriver through the wheel bolt hole to turn the cog anticlockwise or clockwise, one tightens one lossens.
Tighten untill you just hear the drums rubbing the lossen a little.
Do that help?
