Nice debate chaps. I have owned both,
e30 316, 325 m-tech1 sport, 325 tourer (current motor).
E36 3.0 m3, 328ise.

In my experience it is hard to have this discussion with regards to which is better because even though one was the predeccesor to the other they are very different vehicles.

Imo the e36 is better.
I would rather have either of my e36's back than any of the e30's I have (or do) owned.

I forget the original poster's name but what he said about the way most people (well he said birds but...) look at them is they don't look twice at an e30, whereas an e36 still a head turner if you own a smart one. You got to remeber in the big world most people aren't as fanatic about BMW's as we are and the newer your BMW looks the more money you must have. Sad but true :(

I have immense respect and love for e30's. I think they are great little cars great fun to drive and handle really well in an entertaining manner. The e36 isn't as involving or entertaining but I promise you it is has a lot more outright grip. Take it from someone who spends a lot of time breaking traction in both models.
I prefer the handling of the e30 but then I drift mine and I need it to be communicative and not particually grippy at the rear.
My last e36 had quite a lot of money spent on it of which a lot was tailored towards it drifting. It was hard work to drift it in 2nd in the dry let alone third. The e30 has much less grip and is much easier to drive sideways at any speed imo.
If I was to have a race on road or track I would bet the e36 would stick it together better through the corners.

That's just my experience of both but I feel it is unbiased as I like them both and have owned them both.

Oh and I do feel it is a shame this site is so down on the e36. It is another BM after all. The e36 forum I used to be on had mucho respect for any nice e30 I feel it should be the same all around, I mean, at least it's not a Merc lol.
