aha! makes perfect sense, yeah he lives opposite the primary school (won't mention the name..) iirc - i've passed by and noticed the car many a time, i'm not usually a fan of the e36 compacts but that one looks spot on..

In fact, i used to live in the house that backs onto the one where i've seen the car i think? Had a white 325i coupe and a lachs silver 325i touring that looked like it'd been cleaned with a brillo pad..nice.

He's nearly finished, so he wont be there much longer ;) At some point that car's going to get the power that goes with the looks. We plan on doing an engine conversion when we're done with the sportster (see sig).

I think he keeps it in the house's garage a lot at the moment since the other people moved out below him.

i don't blame him for keeping it in the garage - my touring used to get keyed every other day but it barely made a difference to the overall appearance, fortunately/unfortunately (depending on which way you look at it..!)

i'd kill for a garage up here, have to settle for off-road parking and a car cover - shall be needing a runaround for the winter when it's raining, not leaving the motor outside!

good luck with the swap, that's the only theng the pre facelift compacts had - the poor range of engines!

looking good, not seen many Diesel's, how do they compare with the petrol versions, obviously cheaper to run as far as fuel goes!

Are they noisy?

the noise that they make is very good isolated... with the hood open you almost can't talk to someone :P
but i like the noise she makes , but of course there is nothing above a 6cilinder petrol engine like my other bmw...

the driving goes very well, she has 90 horsepower, they do their best!

isn't it funny that people who reply to tis thread usualy have very low post counts!

I have driven a few e36's and at the end of the day you might as well be in a toyota avensis! Yes there are some splendid engine in the cars but rest of it lets them down!

Who really can see an e36 as ever becoming a classic? The e46 is a far better lookin car a better driving car which I 'm pretty sure will become a classic, e36 no!

Mmm,

I would agree that the e46 is a far better looking car and it probably handles better as well but I think that's to do with development. My e36 feels like its on rails unless you are driving either very aggressively or at very high speeds, which then either loses your license or your life!

The main reason for me rallying an old car is because you can have fun at lower speeds. To have the same fun in a new car would mean driving at warp factor eight. I think its similar for the e30 it's a great car for RWD fun at lower speeds. But for shear speed on fast B roads my 328 sport would out grip most things at a similar price especially in fourth and fifth  . In fact one day driving up to Brecon from Merthyr on the a470
I caught and pasted a Helicopter and it felt like we weren't going that quick, It was early in the morning when the roads were quiet by the way!!

I have rallied most things from a full house Mini Cooper 's' to a wild 400bhp 3 door Sierra Cosworth, and I still think after finishing a rally and getting back into the e36 its a fine place to be.

But each to there own I suspose

Regards

Mark

Low post count yeh hilarious.

The question wasn't about classics just who has one and who asked about the E46?

here you go, i dont have a low post count!! my bro and my old man have e36s.
my bro has a T plate 318is (sport one with the mtec bits), and my old man has a T reg 323i sport touring. they are both very good cars. sadly im not in the habit of taking photos of them but here's one of the coupe:
Image

they have their flaws, but no more than an e30. they are good looking cars, the windows and the roofline on the coupe are so much better than the e30, the pillarless doors are gorgeous too. as for the touring there's no competition in my eyes, the e36 looks great as a touring.
aside from that, the interior is far superior, steering, brakes etc are better, the grip with the Z axle rear and bigger tyres etc is much better, they're quieter, more comfortable etc. the engines are also fantastic, not so much the M44 (although its quite a good car at soaking up the miles both on the motorway and in town) but the M52 is a corker.
handling-wise i have lots of confidence in the e36, it makes the e30 feel quite primitive, it understeers and wags its tail much more than the e36. the e36 is really nice to drive spiritedly, the e30 keeps you on your toes a little more. my e30 is thoroughly modified handling-wise too, yet its not really any more competent than a standard e36.

early e46s look crap, as do early e36s (obviously unless modded). late e36s and late e46s look good. my e30's fun, but it certainly has drawbacks compared to an e36.

I have an E36 M3 racer which started as a commuter and although flawed, it's still an amazing car off the shelf for road use.

For track use though the E30 M3 is a better standard package.

As mentioned above, the E36 is a better car in most aspects, but it shuld be as it's newer and has had more development.

That said, I've always fancied an E30 325 tourer after owning a saloon and cab a few years ago and I've at last got one.

It's old, soggy and slow, but I love it :) and look forward to turning it into a standard looking, tweaked, everyday car.

Cheers

Paul
