I got in my friends M535i today - its an absolute wreck that he's using as his road car while he restores his other M535i to perfect condition.

All I can say is  The instant acceleration was amazing - so much torque!

It was F@£king amazing! If that's what a knackered one feels like I can't imagine what a mint one must be like. Makes my 320i feel like a slug (tho I still love it)

Is the M3 based on the E30 design even faster than that? If so, I think I might be buying one as soon as I qualify - shelve all the plans to mod my 320i and just keep that as a second car.

Anyway I think I've fallen in love with the M535i - I might have to start a spin-off site - www.m535zone.co.uk, anyone?

Hey Toby - my friend's John from Loughborough - it was the M535 he bought from you. Still going fine, though he swears at the dogleg gearbox a lot cos it confuses him! It's tatty, but its still a lovely car though. Really like it. Feels like you hammered it a fair bit in the time you had it though - feels older than 110k

Having been in it, I'm tempted to get one at some point. But just wondering how expensive are they these days? Do they compare to modern BMWs performancewise - I'm not meaning current M5, but are they faster than a new 325i? Just interested, cos it felt F**king quick. And how easy are the parts to get?

There is one on ebay that needs work for £7500!

I would expect quite a clean one for that money, surely that one at £2500 is a complete dog??

£7500 upwards should be show spec

£7500 it should be mint with 100k or less!

£5000 should get you into a good one

This is the bumf that goes with the car above:

Details: number 086, car has potential but needs attention. blue leather interior (no rips or tears) air con, elec seats, abs, cruise, m body kit (o/s skirt missing) 16" bbs (4 avons 1 brand new) new battery, plugs, oil & filter, has been stood for 4 years but had re-con engine just before & is running well. (parts already bought to start restoration, included) i want to keep it but have no space or time.

e28 535i"s are great cars. they will wipe the ass of any so called 2.7 e30.

they really are fast. partly down to the low curbweight and 220bhp. the e34 varient does not come near these.

they can be found for cheap, but most are overpriced scrap with a 2k pricetag. try and find the normal 535i. it has all the nice bits, lsd, billys etc. but without all the fussy parts, nasty kit etc.

forget the m5, all the low priced ones are turds and you cannot maintain them them on a shoestring.

correct me if I am wrong but the M535 is just a dressed up e28 535 isnt it-they must be dirt cheap if you look around.

I think theres only a few hundred rhd m535's imported into the uk so obviously will hold the value-one for £2500 is either being sold by a muppet or a total dog IMO

dirt cheap if u dont mind a total restoration project, but a good one will set u back over a grand
not really any more expensive to run than a 325i

the £2.5k car is NOT an m535i.
its a genuine m5 and there were only 187 rhd ones imported.
might seem pricy considering its condition, but a good one is a whole lot more - not a cheap car to run either, no shoestring budgets here pls

well if its genuine & intended as a project I think £2.5k is a good price-I love my e34 but I guess the e28 has a certain allure as there are nowhere near as many in the UK.

Guy down the road has got a beautiful lach silver e28 M5. Its absolutly mint and goes like nothing else. Often see him blapping around and its great to see the older M cars being loved and used properly.

Your e34 looks pretty tempting though - that leathers out of this world!

I'd made a stupid mistake - thought the E28 M535i and the E28 M5 were the same thing. Been doing some research though and found out about the 60bhp difference. That must be some beast - the M535i was impressive enough. I think I know what my next car is going to be (once I have the money).....

thanks mate-yep it is ste's old m5.

has needed a little bit of tweaking but its getting there.

I am really p*ssed off though-wife drove it once & kerbed 3 of the wheels !

just wish I didnt have to wait for the oil to warm up before booting it-but thats life-its def worth it when it gets there-I have been thinking about turboing it-not certain yet.

I am getting it serviced properly soon & will prob decat it & remap it at bexleys.

ste now has a 325 touring (or 2)-not sure what his plans are for that.

Just been reading the specs on the E28 M5. 5.8secs 0-60?!!? Is there any E30 that can get anywhere near that? I bet the insurance for that on a 21-year-old would be quite high....

i don't know official figures but with good tyres and a LSD, a 3.5 M30 powered (m535i 12v lump) E30 should do about 6 second 0-60's...

anyone have official figures for anything?

my one an only experience with driving a M535i provoked my to bin my 2.5 and put a 3.5 in!!!

Being an old git, I had my first M535 when I was 20, she was a "B" red dogleg, and flack it scared the sht out of me, Iv had two others th last I sold 3 years ago for peanuts and it was a minter! Thou they have lots of Power the best is when your doing 80 on the Mway and some git sits up your ass in a merc or ford and floor it 100+ in secs.
Did Heathrow to Bristol in 45mins once! before speed cams.
One thing i will say though I also owend a intergrale and if you want to be scared! my old man used to say its like being in a 4wd rollerskate! :P

Interesting... I might have the chance of one of these. I don't know what condition its in though. Are they difficult to get parts for? I'm guessing that there won't be as many in the breakers as E30s?

Cheers
