Greetings. I have recently purchased a 2007 320 cd sport, and just wondered if any of the experts on here know at what mileage the timing chain should be changed. It's currently on 110K.

TIA

Fi :)

Long time no see!

There is no set interval for replacing the any BMW timing chain.

2007 is the change over year from M47 to N47 on 320d's. N47 timing chains are well known for breaking and its a case of when not if. You only need to google N47 timing chain to see how prolific they are.

There seems to be no real milage they are prone to going at as I've replaced them when they have become noisy (first sign of failure) on engines with a little as 50k miles yet I know of some with 130K+ miles and still going strong.

M47 timing chains on the other hand seem to be much more durable and 250k is not a problem for them on engines that are looked after.

Thanks for those words of wisdom, Barry.

Mine was built late 2007 so I guess I should look at a replacement 8O

I don't suppose you have a ballpark figure that BMW might charge me for doing this...? The car has full service history, but about half is from an independent rather than BMW.

There are varying costs to replacement as there are a few methods of repair. The most extreme being removal of the engine a complete strip down to replace all the guides, all three chains and the crankshaft (as the crank sprocket is part of the crank) and the least extreme being some of the parts replaced using split link chains.

Its also worth checking with BMW to see if the car has had any chain work in the past under warranty or good will.

If you don't have a tame person in the dealer network then you can call BMW customer services and check with them.

How do M52B25 chains fare, out of interest? I have a 1997 P-reg E39 523i that's approaching 160,000 miles...

Ive changed these at 120k miles that have started to wear into the timing cover yet I've seen them make 200k without issue!

If they get noisy then remove the cam cover and look down the timing chains with an endoscope.
