I always do this!

Not only do i have my own set of shims i also have a tub full of part worn shims to use to get the clearance bang on to bottom as with the shim kit they are set sizes with .04mm gaps between them so the next shim up is sometimes too big to use to get it to that end of the window.
I knew that would G you up! :)

The joys of a surface grinder to hand makes life easier as well. I found on my motor all of my shims required were within .16, so quite consistent wear / original valve seat depth. So much that I might order some more to replace that part of the set.
Unfortunately it's well justified to remark about the lack of effort people put in to doing valve clearances.

I've even heard of one main dealer workshop controller telling people specifically not to do them!!!

S54 ones are easy anyway as the shims pop out easily due to their size compared to S14/M88/S38/S50 large shims that are fiddly to get out as the film of oil between the bucket and shim holds them together.

Care must be taken with the S54 shims though as they are easy to drop into the engine.

So been on the frag hunt today. Picked up a boot lid as the paint on mine isn't great, a spoiler as it was de-optioned from factory and it looks a bit too 330i from the back, non corroded roof rails, head unit with no dead pixels and a non-bled rear view mirror with the red dome in tact.

He also has a pair of AP racing 6 pots for up front that need new discs and pads that might be for sale. Trying to decide what a sensible offer is.

I'm sure a few of you will know the car all this is off. Guernsey car with a 650hp supercharged lump that had a front end and is the star of this video:

Apparently it costs £6,500 to repair that mess 8O

Is it just the M3 that suffered from that or all E46?

All e46's. The more powerful models seem to suffer the worst but it can afflict a 316i.

I've been chatting to Dan about him reinforcing it as can be seen in this thread:

Very nice. I keep having the urge to get rid of my E46 330i and buy myself an M3.

Where do you for a long drive in Jersey?

There's some fantastic driving roads over here. Also the road network is very dense so it's easy to spend an afternoon driving around and not seeing the same road twice. Buy one, they are great!

So I've just returned from a trip up to Dan's. Left last night at 9, arrived in Portsmouth at 8, up to Chesham to drop off a tech 2 kit, then up to Dan's. Hit major traffic on what I think was the m1 and had some SMG issues. Think it got too hot, as soon as I got up to speed again and the car cooled down it went away, and the light extinguished itself once I restarted the car later on. Twitchy bum moment so I'll probably replace the pump once it's back for good measure.

Other than that the car was great. Happily sat well over 100 most of the day (the perks of J plates :D) and I had lots of big sideways on your lovely roundabouts. I even got to see Rav for all of 2 seconds. Although jumping out of a dodgy looking Tranny at the airport with Rav at the wheel probably got me on a watch list.

Car should be done in a month or so, and then I'm planning a romp round Wales when I go to pick it up

There are repair kits available for the SMG pumps which includes a new motor, temp sensor and some other bits and bobs.

Cheers Barry, that's what I meant by pump. F00k paying BMW £2,500+ for one when it seems the pumps don't really fail, just the motor.

After doing some reading, apparently it's very common and caused by the temp sensor sitting so close to the exhaust/engine and picking up a false reading. Wiring a resistor inline apparently cures it. Since the box hasn't given me any issues and when checking the live data recently, all the pressures are fine I think I'll give that a go and see what happens.

The thing is I'll never be sat in traffic like that again in Jersey so may never know if it makes a difference!

I ended up buying those AP's and the discs and pads arrived today so they will be getting fitted as soon as it's back. I also bought these:

http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=139210

I know I know, reps  But I got a quote from BMW for genuine wheels and was shocked at how reasonable the are (if you can call £1,800 reasonable) and was going to pull the trigger. But I asked on m3 cutters people's opinions and the overwhelming majority told me to save £1,300 and buy the reps, including several who own both. So ordered those, a set of 12mm spacers all round and new extended bolts for the grand total of £525 delivered once VAT was removed.

If they are cack or heavy I'll keep them as winter wheels and buy some genuine CSL's. We shall see. If they are decent I'll spend the difference on a pair of rear AP's to match the fronts.

I'll do an update once it's back from Dan's. I'm also planning a little driving holiday with Rav and Gert through Wales for when I pick it up.

Rav must be paying you well for your 'services', AP racing come with a price tag.

I went to look at an M3 today, described as mint, front araches were hanging out. £12k was tasking price which was double what I'd of paid.

Rav is being a little b1tch because I bought reps.

They weren't cheap, that's for sure. I can't believe how light the whole set up is, especially given their size.

Seems to be a lot of over priced turds out there. I viewed 2 a while back and they were both utter dogs. This one isn't spotless, but the price reflected that.

So I've had the car back from Dan's a few weeks now. Anyone who is thinking of an e46 m3 I highly recommend taking it to Dan. He even made me a coffee when I picked it up :D

So here are the cracks Dan found:

Image

And I'll let the pics do the talking for the work carried out:

Dan had various bits blasted and coated:

Image

Image

Image

And had the wheels refurbished at about a quarter of the cost of getting them done locally:

Image

So I flew over, picked it up and treated my J plates like I had diplomatic immunity :D I went down to Ace to see Kos and Rav tagged along like a bad smell. Then had the fantastic idea to drive through central London thinking it would be like super car season. It wasn't, but I managed 3 figures down the Mall, sorry Queen E!

Image

I stayed in a Premier Inn in Southampton and left nice and early to make the ferry in plenty of time. Unfortunately a taxi decided he wanted to be in my lane on a dual carriageway while I was sat in it and pulled into the side of me :(

Image

There's damage to the wing, wing mirror, newly refurbished wheel, side skirt, door and bumper. He's admitted liability and I've had approval from insurance to use a friend's body shop. Funny how the entire front of the car needs a respray to get a colour match :D total quote has come to comfortably over £2k.

Anyway, here it is home, washed and in the garage:

Image

Image

I was going to wait till all the insurance was sorted before I did any more work to it, but I couldn't stand looking at these any longer so I fitted them on Tuesday evening:

Image

Probably the best modification I've ever done to a car. They have transformed it. I also picked this up, it's going to be loud :D

Well it's now going in for a heavily insurance subsidised full respray. The paint isn't great so instead of having a patchwork quilt of repairs etc, it's all getting done.

Thank you Mr Taxi Driver :D
