They're not unreliable, but they are a pain in the arse to fix when they go wrong - which to be fair isn't that often. When an E34 ABS module lasts forever, why is the E39 one such a pain? I broke a 1999 523i Touring for the bits to do a manualectomy on a 530i and around 1/4 of the drivers side sill was literally missing.

At least it's not an E46, the biggest pile of poorly conceived sh1t ever made. Pulling one apart in Pete's passage reminded me again just how awful they are. Makes a Peugeot 307 seem like a really good idea.
I worked on an E34 the day before - just a totally different standard of engineering. Everything fits together like it was designed to come apart and the stainless steel ABS sensors practically fall out once the allen bolt is removed.

At least the plastic ABS sensors drill out easily, which is handy :)

'Cause the E34 one uses decent quality components and is mounted in a compartment separate from the engine bay, whereas the E39 version uses cheap 85 degree capacitors, and is mounted six inches from the exhaust manifold. BBA-Reman reckon they can do something about the cheap parts, but not the mounting position.
