I've been offered an 86 M535i Auto by my friend dad. It is near perfect condition with only 68k with full history in diamond black with dark cloth seats. Un marked throughout with only 3 owners. It is all original and a chrome bumper model. It's not really my cup of tea but as the Mot has expired and its sat in his lock up doing nothing he wants rid. Does anyone have an idea of the cars value and is the car desirable. Thanks

It's worth what you are willing to pay for it !

sadly it's an auto, 525e's and 528i's in reasonable condition clinging to an MOT are now easily fetching around 2-2.5k
A good solid M535i in chrome guise (rarer than the body kitted version) is surely worth around 4k + esp if it's genuine like you said :)

I have just paid a bag for this M535i turd which had been sitting in a hedge for the last 12 years :D

Luckily it's Dogleg with Leatherzz :)

It still has the mtech kit, just the top of the bumpers are chrome and the cloth sports seats are as new so better than most cracked leather seats in my opinion. I've been looking around and there have been some on eBay in good condition with well over 100k for over £6k. As you say they are only worth what someone will pay but are there people out there that will pay £6k + for one of these??

I'm pretty sure if you can see the chrome bumpers then the car will not have Mtec front/rear spoilers
It may have rear boot spoiler and side skirts and arch covers

When you say you've been offered it what price have you been offered it for as I take it the owner isn't planning on giving it away or is this one of those threads where you can buy the car for £9.34 and a Mars bar but want the internet to tell you the car is worth £724106 all day long ?

I've been asked to make an offer for it, as I buy and sell quite a few 80's cars. I think it's difficult to workout what it's true value is. I don't want to offer say £3k if its worth £6k it would look like I'm trying to stitch him up.

As it has no MOT and is 'sitting in his lockup' it WILL have issues and they WILL cost money to sort.

I'd be starting lower, much lower. Remember, the 6k ones are FOR SALE, not SOLD !!!!

As said earlier, E28s are very good news, especially low mileage nice spec ones ,BUT it is a much smaller market than the E30 market and the potential victims are generally weapons grade weapons :)

Pretty much worthless, what did you say the owners address was?

Don't offer anything until either you've been right round it (particularly underneath) or had it put in for an MOT.

A really decent M535i can fetch £6k. A dog can cost £6k to get through an MOT.

In answer to the above question above Rape Methyl Ester version, it's apparently a mistake that made it on to a lot of build sheets - it refers to the diesel versions being able to use it, but for some reason got put on petrol model build sheets too. I saw it on an E32 730i build sheet recently.

And to the OP, if it has chrome bumpers then it can't have the proper M Tech kit too - the M Tech bumpers sit over the top of the chrome ones. It could have something like Zender skirts with chrome bumpers though. And there was also a 535i SE, which was mechanically the same as the M535i but without the kit.
