2010 335d hydrolocked?..wtf

Earlier today i was in my friends above mentioned car and we came across a burst water main of which flooded the road with about 7-8 inches(this did rise a little with on coming traffic) of water,so we slowed down to about 3 miles an hour,went through and engine died and wouldnt start.
Phoned a local garage who had heard of this before and mentioned hydrolocking and that the engine will prob have to be replaced?!

How is water supposed to get in the mofo engine at that speed and surely if if had then this is a severe design fàult??

Anyone eles heard of this before??

If the air intake is mounted low down and the water was splashed up by a bow wave, then it is possible.

You may of only be doing very low speed but engines suck very hard.

It'll take hardly any water to hydro an engine, especially a diesel.

A teaspoon in one cylinder is usually enough.

Sometimes the engine will just stop. Removing the plugs and cranking over to clear the water can get them working, but if its gone with any momentum, or stopped and was spun on the starter then there's a good chance its bent some rods.

I've replaced engines in E9x 320d's that have hydro locked.

fck me, i had the same in a 320d, my dad removed the plugs and left it over night, the next day he removed the fuse for fuel pump and crankd it with no plugs, about an hour or so later he got it to start with shit loads of smoke, he said it may have bent rods

the car went to cannock auction and i never seen it again
