AKG's are awesome.. I spent more than 50p on my coilovers so they were perfectly acceptable to drive everyday. In fact they were better than acceptable. Rode no worse than B8's..

a good E34 is a great car well up to the job, don't dismiss the 518i as a daily smoker I was very very suprised by the one I owned for a while,

He's been quiet on here!
518i engine bays are comedy. You can do a clutch from under the bonnet!
I like E34's and think they'll be as classic as the E28 in not so many years time. The E39 was a better new car, but now they're old they can be a pain in the bum. The ABS module built into the ABS block that goes wrong - you know, the one that replaced a perfectly good Bosch ECU that never goes wrong. Why DID they do that?
What you want is an early 12v 520i Auto with M20 power.

I remember them well. Back in 1991 I was working for a Ricoh photocopier place in Darlington and the boss had an Alpineweiss 520i Auto on the F - steels, cloth, no roof.
I borrowed it to go somewhere and did a cheeky manouvre out of a side turning. With a big van looming down on me, I pulled the T bar back to '2' and just nailed it. It made an impressive noise, but made very stately progress.
I had a G reg 520i manual about 7-8 years ago in 668 Glanzschwartz - it wasn't a bad old turd really. Very basic electrics on those early 518i/520i's - no LCM or GM/RM under the back seat. Just a few relays and an E30 style mileometer.
I still have my invitation* to the E34 launch at North Oxford Garage, June 1988.
Two E34's under sheets, a Lapis 520i with Lotus leather and 415 TRX's (!) and a Malachite green 535i. Those were the days.
* Edit; just found it - Thursday 2nd June 1988, 7pm-10pm.

Nope, Anthrashite. I can feel that plastic four spoke in my sweating palms as the 4HP22 shifted down three ratios to contain the 125 bhp*bss325i wrote:Was it indigo?Andyboy wrote:I remember them well. Well -had a look at the red 'sport' today acompanied by Penton of BBB (many thanks)
Unfortunatly it has an MOT due no tax no aircon and no laquer on the roof or sunroof,
Looked like it had been shown a can of paint stripper, interior was nice, engine sounded good and the service book was there albeit not recently updated...
If someone wants a project have at it, offered 600 and no joy...
Looking at two/three other potentials as of now,

Or this perhaps, loose the schnitzer badges, throw the dog in the back and never polish it...
Only problem is that i could get a little too attached...

The e39's are actually better (or roughly the same IME) on fuel on paper.
The reason the 34's a better car is that as everyones stated, the 39 is too complicated and the complications are made worse by the inferior quality of the modules etc involved. I've suffered the ABS module Andy speaks of and it's a right royal pain in the arse! Also, how many m50 525 e34's are leaking oil at the moment? Despite the years! My 39 currents spots the drive over night due to something on its M54 that I can neither see nor feel. So that'd be another strip down then!!!
People always moaned about the e34 and it's steering box and multi joint front end and raved when the 6 pot e39 came out wit a rack and pinion set up. F*ck me! give me a 34 style set up anyday if the 39 you own is running mTECH suspension. They wear suspension components out like they are going out of fashion and from experience, I've driven my current e39 for 2.5 years (and this is my 2nd) and for probably 1.5 of those, it's had some issue with the front end somewhere!
Believe me, a 34 is quality over cost, the 39 is cost over quality! end of!

A new pair of alloy suspension components sir? That will be a half pound of flesh off your right leg and a third of your left arm please...
Ive just noticed this turd on the bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230673546136? ... 1423.l2649
Looks like it would have been a nice chariot once upon a time, apart from the vile interior colour, but electric dipping side mirrors? Electric column positioning? Extra capacity fuel tank? Ive never heard of these
Can any perverts expand on this? Or is it just ebay bull?

The auto column was available I believe as part of the electric memory pack which included the dipping passengers mirror. An expensive option back in the day.DanThe wrote:A new pair of alloy suspension components sir? That will be a half pound of flesh off your right leg and a third of your left arm please...![]()

I must say that toys excite me greatly...
The more that can be purchased with prospective barge the better
I've seen the auto dipping feature as well, did wonder how much pain would be involved in a retrofit...
