Yes, at least half of the members here probably hate rat look cars, but I'll give it a shot. I bought a crashed E36 318is earlier this year, and rebuilt the front end in a "working" condition. Started with a 1/3 rusted hood, with welded bolts sticking up from the hood to keep it in place. The car looked like shit prior to the crash, as a friend of mine managed to turn a good looking car into a piece of garbage in a year.
Yesterday I grinded the WHOLE car down to bare metal, then applied salt water and vinegar to it, and it's starting to rust quite nice. I've been browsing the internet for quite some time looking for inspiration for a 'theme', but the one I like the best is the most known - Rusty. I'd love to have shark mouths diving to the front wheel arch, but I don't want to be a copy cat of Burroughs. I've been thinking of using the german eagle (Not the Nazi one.) on my doors, but I don't feel that's enough. I'll probably go with a roof rack later on, and new rims if I decided to keep the car after the license plates goes out of date.
Post pictures, link or just your thoughts.
Cheers,
Mike

I'd say a purposely rusty car has got to be one of the hardest tricks to pull off, especially on an E36. I'd be giving Mike a message on his forum to get some additional tips. He has been known to lurk here too.

The car is totally rusty now, after only two hours of salt water and vinegar. Looks quite nice, but it's lacking some decoration. Need some good tips on what to make of the car, as of now it's just rusty and shabby. Not a fan of sticker bombing it. I want something clean, but cool.
I'll consider giving Mike a PM at StanceWorks, but I doubt it's the first PM he has gotten of this matter, haha.

So, if I read that thread title right you'll be rat-looking the E36 and we'll be suggesting names for you?
Do something original with it. Take it down to your local art college (end of year shows are on now) and find someone who does good stencil work and give them free rein on it might be one idea..

Well, kinda, haha. I'd like some name and theme suggestions.
Hm, well the universities here in Norway is about 8-9 hours away from me, but still a valid idea if I lived closer. But I'll ask some artist/designer friends for some tips, thanks mate.

Tell him Skipunda at E30zone suggested. Only messaged a couple of times on a cross-forum thing a while back but it might work.winchester wrote: I'll consider giving Mike a PM at StanceWorks, but I doubt it's the first PM he has gotten of this matter, haha.

Wheels and stance will be critical, what are you planning.

Its got to look like you've taken the springs out and you're just dragging it. Best thing to do is go for an old company thats gone bust but if you said their name everybody will know who u mean. For example 'Opal Fruits' everyone knows it but they are long since gone. Something from the year of the e36 would be ideal. Get some tins out and an artist / designer make the stencils, can it up and then the rust will flow over the stencil and weather it and it will look like a gone but not forgotten thing of the past that looks like it was abandonned at the factory/shop all them years ago heres a few

To fit into the 'look at me' crowd, don't forget the roofrack with old suitcases and a skateboard.
The art college idea was a good one - bit late now though.

skipunda: I'll consider it. I'll try to get some pictures of it, but it's not easy without a camera nor a phone due to a drunken "I wanna jump into the lake stunt" a couple of weeks ago.
oldroydsr4: Yes, that is true, but at the moment there will be none. The car was ready to be scrapped before I did this, but I gave it a last finishin touch to make it stay on the road for a little longer. A girlfriend of mine is the one who crashed it this winter, but I bought a parts car and fixed it up. If I get the cars license plates renewed in February I'll go with some sweet low offset split rims, 10x17 rear and 8,5- or 9x17 front. Not sure what it will be, but it will look sweet. The good thing about that is that I can actually use the wheels on my E30 when I do a M3-lugswap later on.
mercdriver: I'll do some searching, but none of those companies tells me anything, haha. Making it a nintendo theme is not a good idea tbh. I'll do some more searching and experimenting today.
Andyboy: Haha, good one. Yes, a roof rack and something fancy is a must.

not a bad idea if you really want to try and be different and can poke fun at yourself.
forget putting try hard shite like roof racks and jap subway rings on....that's just gay. taking the piss out of it by putting "look another shite rat" or "look i'm a sad rat loser" in big letters somewhere would be amusing.

Thanks for the ideas guys, haha.
I think I've got a good idea now, but I won't tell until it's completed.
I just named my car BARON.

Rat look and paintstripped scrap is so last year. It doesn't look good at all. It just looks as though you're driving around in rubbish. Don't wash or shave for 3 weeks and walk around town - it's the same thing.
Do something new. Paint it satin USAF blue with WW2 US Air Force logos on it, or modern day German Luftwaffe or RAF colours/logos.
Just be different.

This is the only photo I have of the car. Was taken yesterday. Working on some decorations as we speak, will post new pictures later.

The only reason I'm doing this is because the car would've been scrapped if I hadn't saved it. Not looking for critisism like "RAT LOOK SUCKS", but if you do think so - go read another thread.

i have some info to share.......The initial five-door and three-door 1-series hatchback models ride on rear-wheel drive (and optional four-wheel drive) underpinnings shared with the next-generation 3-series. The five-door model will launch in the UK in September and will be followed into showrooms by a three-door in spring 2012.........

I ratted my e36 while it was on it's last legs. Included a rude slam (we are talking tucked tyres all round here), zip tied an e30 318is front splitter on. Rusted bonnet/drivers wing/sunroof/petrol flap and sticker bombed. Wheels were 5 series BBS's with flared arches all round.
Got a lot of love for it, surprising how many people wave, smile and give you the thumbs up etc. Would do it again for sure

This is an E30 forum, and whilst most of us appreciate a nice E36, we're not terribly interested in your old shit or how you're going to make it into yet another rat look wankermobile.

If I'm not mistaken, the subforum description says "Discuss Non-E30 BMW's in here - No selling!" so I'm allowed to do so. Why are you being so rude? Everyone has their own taste, and I sure as hell aren't aiming to please everyone elses but mine.Andyboy wrote:Or even better, f*ck off and talk about $40 E36 junk on another forum. Don't delete this,
Winchester - There are alot of flat cap wearing purists on this forum , who will always prefer shiney paint and FSH. But I prefer reading threads on rusty e36's than - ' look I have detailed my 318is's engine bay'.
Keep on doing what your doing.
