Quote of the thread, you will always be wondering what if?

Ive driven both and if i had to choose between them i would go with the EVO every time

They just 'feel' better.

Don't forget to check your insurance before you buy one.

I would love an M3 but don't fancy paying almost £2k for insurance.

Agreed, I expect this may come to nothing if the OP is under 23, which judging on posting style and 'content' I would put him at 19.

Insurance on these is crazy money.

He didn't exactly have much else to go on and to be honest, I went on your writing style as well... No offence.

I'm 23 myself and the insurance is retarded, the difference between this and my CTR is over double.

As you're 31 I guess it's all good.

well he shouldnt go on judging people, keep his judgements to himself.

its called humour and sarcasm.
:)

if i was 22, how could i possibly insure a 850csi.

obviously the fool never read the whole thread and that shows to me he prob goes around posting negative comments on people's post.

I think it was the title in all capitals and the general way you worded sentences, I can see where he is coming from. Sorry.

As I said though, as you're 31 it matters not. Just wish I could insure one for more of a reasonable cost price. What is your insurance on one of these out of interest?

fair enough

CAPITALS attract more attension: simple common sence, hence thats why I use them

sorry for not speaking proper english, but you know what "its all good".

this will prob go on my traders insurance

your two car shortlist only has one high performance car.

do you want something cool? or do you want something quick?

Sorry for being judgemental, but every topic you start is in capitals and the fact you had an iS made me think you were fairly young. Surely no one 'old' buys one. :P Anyhow... I look forward to the pictures of the e36 m3 in the future.

I heard a rumour that some trade policies did not allow you to have an m3 / sierra cosworth / etc on them, due to the amount being binned a few years back on traders policies. But as you have a traders policy, you probably already know this/or have heard the rumour?

There's nothing wrong with judgement. Without judgement there is no capacity to decide if someone is a 'fool'.

They may be a touch big, but the e39 540i manual is an awesome car, more or less as quick as an e46 m3 unless your on the track and you can pick them up for 2-4k, so a fraction of the price too!

too big and more of a motorway crusier.i think the m3 is my best bet.for 3k no other car comes close. The 325i is not a quick car and more of a cruiser and cant touch a m3 for speed so am left with the m3.thanks for the advise guys.m3 non evo it is

hmm, 282bhp and 1700kg vs 338bhp and 1570 kg

nearly as quick as an e46 if the m3 driver self imposes a 6000rpm rev limit maybe

 You would be supprised, its not all about power! Don't forget the torque and how low down its available and gear ratios etc. I would be very interested to know the 0-100 or 60-130mph or quatre mile times of each.

Lets not forget the tuneability vs costs of each too!

To the op, they are very aerodynamic for what they are and handle amazingly considering the extra mass. iirc the later m5 shared some of suspension components.

I have had both cars (the m3 was an ealy 3ltr) speedwise, there was no real difference aside from on the track/twistys

The extra cog helped too!

thanks for the advise

i just cant be arsed messing about with issues on my car(had enough of that with my e30's), so thats why i have opted for a very well maintained 3.0

so what if the 3.2 has 20/30 more bhp and does 5 mpg more.

6 speed!!, i will hardly ever do motorway's so dont need 6

correct.
you need to have stated high performance vehicles are part of your regular stock when you take the policy out, and it will be loaded accordingly

Exactly as Harry says, they are quite different. On a private road they are pretty similar to 5500rpm, where the 540 runs out of puff, the e46 m3 still has another 2000rpm. Different league really. The e46 is noticeably quicker over 90mph.

540i's are not that torquey below 3 grand, not as much as people make out anyway.

The best quarter I could manage was 14.62 or something like that, but it did have 70-100 kilos in it. An m3 would ruin that time.

540 handling, not so much.

Agreed they are different and yes its a bit quicker, but all things considered and given the costs of obtaining and running both vehicles, if youre not doing track days or a bit of a poser then imho the 540 manual makes a lot of sense.

Out of interest, I am going to try to obtain some figures to see exactly what the difference is.

All i know for sure is whilst i had mine, which i believe was bone stock (standard), i had many races with all manner of cars including; AMG's, M's, Alpinas, TT's, Scoobys, rs turbos, cossies, and Skylines And the only e46 that beat it was running a fire breathing 400bhp cossie lump!

Nothing else was much faster, if at all, unless of course they wasn't trying!

Have you ever done a 1/4 mile run or watched it? You need a huge amount more power(or power to weight) to make up time, even a 'measly' 10%.

Never done one no, went to Santa Pod years ago to watch, but not road cars! Not really my thing drag racing.

I still maintain that in the real world that they are an option given the massive difference in cost and similar straight line performance! I would concede that "nearly as quick" may have been a slight exaggeration. But they are truly awesome cars for next to no money!
