twin vanos have too many problems right?

Not according to the thread I linked to. They can be repaired. Good oil changing is important (as with any car, but more so!)

trust me, throwing a grand at it will not do much...
wrong !! the 2.3 was the cossy engine, the 2.5 was the merc built unit and not as good IMO1990 190E 2.5 16V Cosworth

both 2.3 and 2.5 are cosworth engines
the 2.6 was the merc unit (and a 6 pot)
not a great car though, handles ok but isnt quick due to the weight and not much power.
A good e30 325i sport would be the match of it, and an E36 328i Sport runs rings round one.
for the money of the one listed id be looking for an E36 M3 Evo.
£4 - 5k buys a decent one.
heres a few on PH

yeah I tried racing a e46 m3 in my e30 318is - got my pants pulled down to be honest.Alex wrote:a 318is is fun to drive, just dont try and race anyone
i would go for a decent e36 m3
I've just bought a 325i sport, once i've finished beefing that up I may stand a better chance.
my budjet is 7k in total, and i spent 3100 on the car, so i've got 4k to spend on making it quicker

3.2 evos are great but not as reliable as 3.0's and theres not much differance in both cars when being drivin urban.
for starters the 3.2's have better steering & better brakes and are noticeably quicker.
they use less fuel (both around town and on a run)
and on the m/way are way more refined too.
relaibility
well the vanos problem is much overhyped.
the units are noisy due to a design flaw - this doesnt mean they are about to fail though. (check drvanos.com for confirmation of this)
the problems that do occur are leaky seals and failed solenoids - neither of which is difficult or expensive to solve.
you can even get a fully rebuilt vanos unit, with the noise problem cured and new seals etc for £350 odd - and its a diy fit too for anyone half handy with some spanners.
whilst the 3.0 is still a damn good car, the 3.2 is head and shoulders ahead.
several mags said "this is finally the car BMW should have built from the start"
ye i was going for a 325i sport but had a change of heart.
i want something with high performance and e36 m3 seems to be best value for performace and build quality.
I actaully dont like e36's all that much, but a decent m3 in standard form in cosmos black looks the kinda nice and has great performace better than any standard e30.

ye but in reality when driving them for urban use there doesnt feel much differance.
ye i agree that they have better brakes and steering but who cares, its an m3 if its highly maintained i say go for it.
i dont go with labels like its better becuase its an evo, i go with driveability and the one i test drove drove fantastic, so its all good

you make it sound like all evos are a ticking time bombETERNITY wrote:yes i am going to settle for a bmw e36 3.0

thanks for all the advice guys. am leaving the e30 scene for now
there are many thousands being used every day covering thousands of miles a year all over the world. they 'might' be slightly less unrealiable than the 3.0 although i've not seen any figures (have you) theyre still a very solid reliable car in the grand scheme of things. theyre still a bmw after all
regular oil, filter and vanos filter changes with good quality synth, and not pushing the car until it's warmed up and the vanos will last a long long time.
cheers,
harry
