When I had an e46 it came with a 6 disc changer in the boot plus the tape head unit. I bought a BMW Business CD head unit off ebay and swapped that over myself. It didn't cost a lot and was very easy to do so I can recommend doing that if you can.
all e46 have the wires for the cd changer in the boot behind the left side carpet plenty of guides on the net to fit and really easy to do. I did the same in my old e46 as it was good to leave the tape deck upfront as i had one of those ipod tape things to listen to the ipod too
+1 all pre wired for cd changer
