Never had problems with having 17s on an e34, made a major improvement everytime.
Sounds like the wheels, but is your steering box tight enough?

I have some E39 M5 rep wheels on my E34 touring, 235/45/17 tyres, when I first put the wheels on it was terrible, replaced the rear mount bushes (£26 ish each) and it was much better, ive upgraded the front upper arm bushes to 750i items. Still get tramlining but thats down to the steering box which will be getting changed soon, I cant be arsed to adjust it anymore as its leaking anyway. Bit of a pi55er as its only done 110k miles
On a 4 wheel alignment you do not adjust the back wheels. All that happens is that you set the toe angle to the required figure then make sure that when the steering wheel is straight, the front wheels are in line with the rears. This will mean that when you are driving in a straight line, the car is going straight with the steering wheel in the corrrect position. So many cars have the steering wheel a bit to the left or right when going straight. Not only is this annoying but it is a sign that the car probably needs tracking up.
I would suggest letting a professional look at all of the rear bushes and replacing any that have any play at all with new items. Tyres that have gone a bit out of shape can also cause this problem. Is there any shaking through the steering at all? When all the bushes have been eliminated take it to an alignment centre abd get a 4 wheel alignment done. The transformation can be amazing. I have owned an E39 with 18 and 19" rims on and they have been fine but I always have good quality new tyres ( never part worns ) and have the tracking done when the tyres are new. If nothing else it helps to pro long the life of the tyres and I managed to get 30K miles from a set of 18" Yokohamas on my 530 sport

do you have a mate with a standard e34 with 15" bbs type things that you could borrow the wheels? Just to see whether it makes a difference
If you were closer you could have borrowed mine for a test drive.
