dissassemble the engine and acid dip?

maybe a little too much..strong degreaser (maybe not even environmentally friendly, gasp!) and hard work, sandpaper, scrubbing brush etc. cant make it too mint when its still a complete engine, i would worry too much. just make it so you can handle it without getting too grubby

Can't you get flexible attachments for drills? Jenolite rust remover (acid based) is quite good.

Nitromores, let it sink in then go at it with a wire brush and some serious elbow grease, then wash it down.
Dry it off with a blow torch then de-gease it with carb cleaner or de-greaser (whichever's cheaper) then let it dry or use the blow torch again but watch out for the fire ball
Then its all ready for a lick of paint.
There is NO nucleus.

i used angle grinder with the extremley stiff circular wire brush on the end....its seriously viscious and cruised through the rust. then for the little bits in gaps i couldnt get to i used a very stiff wire brush in a drill. i removed it all in an hour or two. dont expect to get all the old paint off because some bits are on so solid they wont move, so paint over them as if you cant get them off with wire brushes they wont move when painted over.

needle scailer, if you can get hold of 1, then wire brush in a grinder, just keep a good grip on the grinder
