Can anyone tell me where to look for the paint code on my car, its a 1989 318i, in a fairly plain poster paint red, so any idea what the official name for the colour is?

It's probably brilliant red (brilliantrot).
Pop the bonnet open and look on the nearside suspension turret, it'll tell you the colour name in German and the paint code (309 for brilliant red).
